The world number 15 would miss his country's Davis Cup quarter-final against Czech Republic in July and would play no part in the year's remaining Grand Slam tournaments - the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Nalbandian picked up a hip injury at the Barcelona Open last month. He lost to Chile's Paul Capdeville in the first round of the Estoril Open in Portugal on his return and underwent surgery in Barcelona earlier this week.

The clinic that performed the surgery said the 27-year-old would remain in Barcelona until the end of May before returning to Argentina to continue his recovery.

"David is in a perfect state of health," said his doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro. "The operation went as planned."

Before going into hospital last week, Nalbandian said: "I have been suffering from feelings of discomfort for a year and a half. It was the hip, then it was not the hip. At the beginning I was not correctly diagnosed so the problem has been dragging on for a year."

Since turning professional in 2000 the former world number three's results stand at 306-148 with 10 titles.
