Pulmonary and pleural diseases cause chest pain; examples include pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, pleuritis, lung cancer, and rib fractures. Cardiac causes of chest pain require urgent evaluation and treatment (see Approach to the Cardiac Patient: Chest Pain).
