Holy Schmoke!

Everything I read about this movie (which I admit was not much, as I try to steer away from having too much knowledge of a film before seeing it these days) said it was weird and confused. Well, of course, I had to go anyway, even though I had to wait months for it to come to a theater in my small town. I was lured in by the reports of steamy sex between Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel!

This first thing in its favor was that it is far lighter than The Piano, much easier to follow and understand, not so full of symbolism. Also, easier for me personally, to relate to (yes, I actually could imagine running away to live in an ashram!). That is not to say this is an easy film, but it had considerable humor and beauty and made good points about the confusing nature of faith and how we all seem to have such little choice in matters that involve overwhelmingly good feelings. It is a lesson in the true nature of kindness.

The cast was first rate; Kate is perfect for the part and Harvey Keitel turns in another good performance. We didn't get enough of Pam Grier. The rest of the family and friends were unknowns to me, which usually makes them more realistic as characters, and each one did a good job, believably.

I love movies and am prone to look for the good in them. I think the critics are giving this an undeserved bad rap. Glad to see Jane Campion has a sense of humor and a compassionate heart.

Bang for the Buck: Worth paying full price
Movie Mood: Serious movie (with tongue in cheek at times)
Recommend to Friends: Yes
