ABOUT DESTRUCTOID

Destructoid is something special. Sure, there are many video game communities online, but Dtoid means so much more to so many gamers around the world. At the heart of it, Destructoid is a unique voice quite like no other.

History

Destructoid is an independently-run publication, driven by our love of gaming and this industry's dire need of accountable, enthusiast press. The company began as a one man blog: It was Yanier Gonzalez's childhood dream to run a hardcore video gamer's club -- a dream later revived when at he was denied entrance to the E3 press conference in 2006 because he wasn't one of the press. Using "Niero" as his pen name, Yanier created a critical blog overnight with indie programmer Tom Lackner's new ElephantBlog software that dared to call out rampant, misleading PR in games media -- picking up an instant readership at the height the HD gaming boom. The site's popularity soared when it began biting the hands that fed it, protesting "stuffy games journalism" at the event by showing up in a giant robot helmet as "Mr. Destructoid" (pictured right). With a solid readership and a memorable brand to boot the company opened an office to turn its sights on better serving the gamer community at large, and the rest is history.

Appearances

Destructoid writers are present at all major gaming industry events and often moonlight as game critics on MTV, G4, Gametrailers, and SpikeTV. Destructoid’s iconic robot is also a licensed playable character in the best-selling Xbox Live Arcade game of 2008: Hudson Entertainment’s Bomberman Live (middle left), marking the first appearance of a gaming web log within a popular video game as well as on the PlayStation 3 release of Bomberman Ultra and other video games.

Present day

Destructoid now reaches over a million readers worldwide, and has become one of the largest independent gaming communities online, with operations in the US, Canada, and the UK. Known for its continued piercing views on the gaming industry and memorable robot mascot, the three-time Webby-honoree Destructoid (or Dtoid for short) has become the pulse of the hardcore gamer. Its unique and often irreverent editorial voice remains true to our humble beginnings, as Dtoid now employs over dozens of writers that update the site nearly every 20 minutes and countless contributions uploaded by the community. Destructoid remains true to its vision: to bring the news, the fun, and its shiny robot head to the world of videogames.

Destructoid has earned a rabid fan base for consistently championing the voice of the consumer and keeping it real despite our growth. Today, we're proud to create new writing jobs for other enthusiasts that share our love of games and offer high-profile publishing space read all over the world. We don't call it work, we don't call it journalism, and we don't call it blogging. We call it living the dream.
