MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) The Department of Health (DoH) confirmed a third case of Influenza A(H1N1) infection at the De La Salle University in Manila, and three other new cases, bringing the country’s total to 33.

The new case, a 17-year-old male, could not recall whether or not he had contact with two Japanese students who tested positive for the disease, Health Secretary Francisco Duque said Friday.

“The student has no history of travel but attended classes at DLSU from May 25 to May 29,” Duque told reporters.

“The three DLSU students are responding to treatment well and do not have fever, including the latest case. Contact tracing though is in progress. The three other cases with history of travel from the United States are recovering from their illness in health facilities,” he added.

Aside from the new case at DLSU, the DoH confirmed three more A(H1N1) cases: a 29-year-old female American citizen and two sisters aged seven and nine years, all of whom came from the United States.

Classes at DLSU were suspended for 10 days earlier this week after a female Japanese exchange student was confirmed infected with the potentially deadly flu virus.

Duque renewed his appeal for calm, saying, “We advise the general public not to panic and follow health advisories. We have prepared for this and recent cases have shown this is a treatable and mild form of flu virus.”

Duque said the DoH was receiving updates from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), whose staff member, a 52-year-old Filipina, who returned from a trip to the US, was infected with A(H1N1).

Aside from the 33 positive A(H1N1) cases, 341 suspected cases tested negative for the disease, while 76 have pending laboratory results.
