Student Life

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

—Lord Alfred Tennyson, from The Eagle

Biography:  I am from a small town called Martin, Kentucky, where I attended Allen Central High School. I graduated in the top 10 of my class. My parents are Thomas and Debra Boyd, and I have one sibling, an elder sister named Angela who is six years older than I. While in high school, I was very active in extracurricular activities (such as Academic Team, Beta Club, R.A.D.D., All County Choir, All County Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, Marching Band, and the Drama Club).

What was the most important thing you learned while attending Alice Lloyd College?

The most important thing I learned while attending Alice Lloyd was time management. Before coming to Alice Lloyd, I had plenty of time to do my homework and balance out my obligations in the various clubs I participated in. However, when I came to Alice Lloyd, that changed. It felt like no longer did I have the time to do everything I needed to get done. I had to learn how to balance my classes, school work, study time, and my work-study as well. Since coming to Alice Lloyd, I have learned how to manage my time more efficiently.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

I would tell prospective students to not procrastinate. Get your homework and projects finished with time to spare. If you wait until the night or day before to do an assignment or study for a test, your grades will not be as high as they could be. So don’t put things off, do your homework before the deadline, and don’t procrastinate.

Why did you choose to attend Alice Lloyd College?

I chose to attend Alice Lloyd College because of the location. My family is very important to me so it was very important that I chose a college that was close to home. Alice Lloyd is located only thirty minutes away from my home, so it gives me the opportunity to receive a good, quality education while remaining close to my family.

How did Alice Lloyd College prepare you for life after graduation?

Alice Lloyd is preparing me for life after graduation by giving me real-world experience. Through the completion of the work-study program, I will already have a resume ready to present to prospective employers, with real work experience. Also, Alice Lloyd has taught me to be an independent, responsible adult and has prepared me to step out into the real-world upon graduation and take my place in the community.

What was the highlight of your Alice Lloyd experience?

The highlight of my Alice Lloyd experience has been being a teacher’s assistant to Dr. Smith-Daugherty. Being a teacher’s assistant to her has been great because I have learned so much from her. She has helped me tremendously in my road to becoming a history teacher someday. By working with her, I have met some great people and have been given the opportunity to help others in the history department who may need it. I have truly enjoyed working with her on a day-to-day basis, and I hope someday I can carry the lessons I have learned from her into my own classroom.
