QUESTION:
Where can i buy a NTIA Appoved DTV Converter Box in my town.(Willard,Ohio 44890) - barb bivens - ,OH

ANSWER:
Walmat is always an option but, they do not always offer the best DTV converter boxes, usually just the some of the cheapest. For as little as $9.00, with your NTIA coupon, you can but a TR-40 converter from www.mydtvpal.com. We invite you to consider this option as we believe the TR-40 is one of the best DTV converter boxes you can get and it will give you a superior viewing experience. Thank you.

QUESTION:
I want to purchase a RCA DTA800B1 using the NTIA coupon. However, it seems impossible to find this brand out there (besides paying full shot on ebay). I only want this brand, do you know where I can purchase this one without being "over" charged for it? Also, do you know when RCA is going to manf. more of them. - D - Brockport,NY

ANSWER:
You are certainly welcome to your opinion about the RCA converter however, we have not found it to be the best choice for several reasons. It has not proven to have particularly good receive sensitivity, it has demonstrated some difficulties decoding enhanced DTV audio services, etc. Combine this with the difficulty you are having finding one, we suggest you consider a different converter. We are MOST impressed with the TR-40 and DTVPal Plus. These converters can be easily purchased online at www.mydtvpal.com These converters have Analog pass-through and the best EPG (Electronic Programming Guide) we have seen. The TR-40 costs under $9.00 with and NTIA coupon. If you still feel you must have the RCA we wish you luck, Thank you.

QUESTION:
Will we be able to watch more channels with the conversion to digital? Will (Digital TV) have channels we do not have now? - connie - Arvonia VA,VA

ANSWER:
Many TV stations already offer multiple programming streams in their Digital Broadcasts. In your area, if there are not already, many new programming sources should be available as time goes on. Some of the most promising aspects of free over-the-air Digital TV lay in its ability to facilitate High Definition programming, multiple streams of different programming and multiple audio channels, to name just a few. Try going to: http://www.titantv.com, enter your zip code and you can see what Digital TV offerings are on in your area. Thank you.

QUESTION:
Your site is sure a lot easier to navigate than the FCC one!!! I have 2 digital boxes, a Zenith and an RCA, Neither of which is pass through capable. I bought them last march, so I'm stuck with them. Can you tell me how to run a A>B switch to get analog? We are totaly dependent on repeaters so DTV may come in piece meal. Its supposed to take until 2012 to be completed here Thanks, Rick - Rick Greville - kingman,AZ

ANSWER:
We appreciate your observation! We try very hard to make sure that our site makes it easy to ask a question, and that our answers are as complete and understandable as possible. Follow this link to see a diagram of how to install an A/B switch and or a splitter: http://www.lptvanswers.com/splitter.html. Unfortunately, a splitter and or A/B switch is prone to signal loss. It is certainly worth a try but, be mindful of this as your picture/signal quality may suffer. If the splitter solution does not work well enough and need to upgrade your converter boxes we recommend the TR-40 and DTVPal units. They have Analog pass-through, complete EPG's (Electronic Programming Guides) and the DTVPal Plus has one of the best receivers we have tested. For more information got to: www.mydtvpal.com. Good luck and thank you for your question.

QUESTION:
Have very little volume on my tv since hooking up an Apex convertor box & Dynex router. Why no volume now? - sally - buford,GA

ANSWER:
We don't know what to tell you about your Dynex router but, the Apex converter box may have an audio level control. If so, make sure you have turned the volume up using the converter box remote. Many DTV converter boxes have this ability. If the volume is turned down on your converter, that would account for the low volume level. Thank you.

SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE DIGITAL TV TRANSITION

On February 17, 2009, many full power television stations, including most of the major network affiliates and large independent stations, converted to digital-only operation. Other full power stations have until June 12, 2009 to complete their digital conversion. If you have a TV set that does not have “HDTV” capability, you will not be able to see these stations any more unless you buy a new TV set or one of the new “converter boxes”. You will see and hear a lot about this change, because the FCC is requiring all full power TV stations to broadcast announcements about it.

What many of these announcements will not tell you is that most Class A, Low Power TV, and TV Translator stations will not convert to digital next February.  They will continue conventional analog broadcasting, and you will still be able to watch them on your old TV sets.  These stations may have smaller coverage areas than full power stations; but there are four times more of them, they are licensed by the FCC the same way as full power stations are, and they have lots of interesting programs.

To survive the digital transition, you need to be able to watch both digital and analog stations.  Most of the digital converter boxes now on the market will not let you do that, because they block analog signals and prevent you from watching stations that may have programming you want to see.

There are five things you can do to keep receiving all TV stations:

1.  Buy a new TV set, hook up an antenna, and watch TV stations for free.  All TV sets now being sold have both digital and analog tuners and can receive all TV stations.  Some are very expensive, but not all.  Stores have frequent sales, and you can buy a small screen set for under $100.

2. Buy a new DVD recorder, DVR or VCR, but make sure that it has both an ATSC and NTSC tuner built-in. All these devices currently being sold have both kind of tuners and have outputs that will work with your old analog TV sets.

 3. Buy a converter box to use with an old TV set. The best kind of box is an “analog pass through” box that will allow you to watch analog stations when the box is turned off. Do not buy boxes without analog capability if you want to be able to watch all TV stations.

4.  Subscribe and pay for cable or satellite services.  These services will either deliver signals that your analog TV can display or will provide their own converter box to use with analog TV sets.  Be careful when choosing this solution.  Even if you do subscribe to one of these services, any televisions you have which are NOT hooked up to a cable or satellite box may not be able to receive some local programming.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is giving away coupons that will give you a $40 credit if you buy a converter box.  These coupons will not be honored if you buy a box with an analog tuner, a DVD or VCR, or a new TV set.  If you think that is unfair, contact your Senators and Congressperson. To find your two Senators, go to www.senate.gov, and to find your Congressperson, go to www.house.gov.  Those websites let you search for the names of Member of Congress from your state and district.

When you go to the store to buy a converter box, ask the salesperson whether the box has an analog tuner or analog pass through capability.  Other terms that may be used are “NTSC” for analog and “ATSC” for digital.  If you want to find out which boxes have analog pass-through before you shop, you can find a list of models at www.keepuson.com.  If you have NTIA coupons, you received a list of eligible models in the envelope.  The ones marked with an asterisk (*) have the analog pass-through featureIf the store where you shop does not have any of these models, or the sales person does not know what you are talking about, shop somewhere else or online.

Don’t be misled into buying a converter box that will cut you off from some TV stations.  Insist on a box with an NTSC/analog tuner or analog pass-through, so that you can continue to watch all TV stations.  Better yet, buy a new TV set or a DVD or VCR.  Even if you cannot use your government coupon, think about whether it is worth losing access to some stations to save a few dollars.  And write to Congress and complain that you should be able to use your coupon however you choose!

Don’t give up your freedom to choose which stations to watch.  Buy wisely, and buy something that will be useful for a long time to come.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THE CONVERTER BOX THAT YOU BUY HAS ANALOG PASS-THROUGH CAPABILITY! If you buy any other box you will not get 80% of the TV stations that are broadcasting in the United States! Read the label carefully, a box with pass through will say so on the packaging. All other boxes will try to mislead you to buy the bad box by using fancy marketing tactics like "get Digital Television" with this box and etc.

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THESE BOGUS SALES GIMICS. Just remember that you want a box with analog pass-through. Keep referring to this website as we will list the good boxes and where to purchase them. Please tell your friends about this problem-even the Geeks at Best Buy do not know about this big problem. Buyer beware!
