When a marriage ends after 20 years, it is a sad event. It is even sadder when the public collapse of a marriage is not a surprise.

The marriage of Corina and Antonio Villaraigosa has been in trouble for years and weathered previous infidelity.

Here is information about the unraveling of the Villaraigosa marriage relationship.

Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa: January 23, 1953 in Los Angeles, California. His birth name is Antonio Ramon Villar.

Corina Raigosa: Abt. 1957 in Pico Rivera, California.

Wedding Date:
After meeting one another in 1985, Corina and Antonio married on November 28, 1987.

In an interview in 2005, Antonio described Corina as the woman "I pursued relentlessly because I knew she was the woman I wanted to marry.”

Antonio has four children and several grandchildren.

Separation and Divorce Time Line:
November 9, 1994: Although Corina had been in a battle with thyroid cancer during Antonio's political campaign, Antonio had an affair the day after his election to the State Assembly. The other woman was the wife of one of their friends and the mother of their godchild. Corina and Antonio separated for 2 1/2 years. They reconciled in the midst of rumors of Antonio's continued reputation as a womanizer.

May 26, 2006: The last time Antonio and Corina were seen together and photographed.

September 5, 2006: The last time Antonio was photographed wearing his wedding ring.

June 3, 2007: Antonio and Corina separated. "... the breakup was triggered by Corina’s discovery on Antonio’s Blackberry of revealing romantic e-mails and messages from a woman. “Corina had sensed but this was evidence,” says a longtime friend. “She’d had enough.”

June 12, 2007: Corina filed for divorce. "Irreconcilable differences" was listed as the reason for the divorce.

July 3, 2007: Antonio admitted to his affair with Mirthala Salinas.

July 5, 2007: Mirthala placed on leave from the television station.

Manuel Abud, KVEA general manager: "As we have stated, we are committed to journalistic excellence. Given the seriousness of the allegations that have been made, we have decided to conduct an internal review of the decisions and events that led us to where we are today. In the meantime, Mirthala Salinas has been placed on a leave of absence from her duties pending this review."

Antonio's Other Relationship:
Antonio has admitted to being unfaithful twice during his marriage to Corina.
  • Mirthala Salinas: A newswoman, Mirthala had covered the political news for Telemundo but was moved from that role in the summer of 2006.
    Telemundo: Mirthala Salinas

    10/2/07: After being reassigned to KVEA's Inland Empire bureau in Riverside, Salinas did not show up for her first day of work. As a result, Telemundo issued a statement that the two had "mutually agreed to end our employment relationship" and that Salinas would not be returning.

Antonio's statement about Corina, June 12, 2007: "During Monday's news conference, Villaraigosa praised Corina as a "strong and vibrant woman" and "an outstanding mother, an exceptional example for the entire community," and said they will continue to focus on their teenage children."

Connie Bruck about Antonio's unfaithfulness in the early 1990's: "Initially, Villaraigosa defended his actions, saying, “It is a matter of the heart.” He eventually acknowledged his error."
