Lansbury Wins Fifth Tony; Ties Harris for Most Acting Honors

By Robert Viagas
07 Jun 2009

Angela Lansbury won her fifth career Tony Award June 7: Best Featured Actress in a Play for Blithe Spirit.

Lansbury's total now ties that of previous record-holder for an actor, Julie Harris.

Harris won all her Tonys in Leading Actress in a Play roles: I Am a Camera (1952), The Lark (1956), Forty Carats (1969), The Last of Mrs. Lincoln (1973) and The Belle of Amherst (1977).

Lansbury won her first four Tonys in the Leading Actress in a Musical categories: Mame (1966), Dear World (1969), Gypsy (1975) and Sweeney Todd (1979). She was nominated as Best Leading Actress in a Play in 2007 for Deuce, but did not win. This 2009 award is her first as Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Harris also won a special Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
