It’s a series: Penguins beat Wings 4-2 in Game 3

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The Detroit Red Wings applied so much pressure and were so in control at times while pushing for the victory that would have effectively ended the Stanley Cup finals, the Pittsburgh Penguins could have used an extra man.

Turns out they had one for nearly 30 seconds during their 4-2 comeback win in Game 3 on Tuesday, an advantage the on-ice officials didn’t spot despite some frantic stick-pounding by those on the Red Wings’ bench.

Need any more proof the Penguins were willing to do anything to save the series?

“We were going, huh?” forward Max Talbot(notes) said, laughing at how the Penguins inadvertently created their own power play. “It was great. Yeah, we got some breaks.”

In reality, it was more like bend but don’t break for the Penguins as the Red Wings took a 2-1 lead during a frantic first period, then were so dominating during the second period that they ended it with a 26-11 advantage in shots.

One more goal, one more power play might have ended it, until the Penguins suddenly found themselves and recovered to take a 3-2 lead on Sergei Gonchar’s(notes) power-play goal with 10:29 gone in the third.

Just in time, too, as the Penguins understood what falling behind Detroit 3-0 in the best-of-seven series would mean—a potential Stanley Cup-clincher as early as Thursday in their own arena, where the Red Wings raised the Cup in Game 6 last spring.

“I don’t want to say it was a must win, but I think everybody knows that we needed to win this game,” said Talbot, whose two goals while shifting between several lines included an empty-net score in the final minute.

In winning, the Penguins had everything they lacked in losing twin 3-1 decisions in the first two games in Detroit, including start-to-finish confidence, resiliency and scoring from throughout their lineup. A sense of desperation, too.

“No team wants to go down 3-0,” forward Jordan Staal(notes) said. “I think we’re starting to understand the way we have to play and it seemed like everyone really came together and did the right things out there.”

Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) didn’t allow any soft goals and, during Detroit’s second-period surge, played better than he has since making 45 saves during a key first-round game in Philadelphia. He also outplayed Chris Osgood(notes), who lost for only the third time in 13 finals games.

“I know in the first and second game, maybe he got criticized a little bit,” Talbot said of Fleury, who made 27 saves. “Tonight, he was definitely first.”

Sidney Crosby(notes) still didn’t find the net as Henrik Zetterberg(notes) shadowed him whenever possible—Crosby has one assist in three games—but playoff scoring leader Evgeni Malkin(notes) set up the first three goals. Malkin, almost invisible at times during last year’s finals, has 33 points in 20 games—the most since Joe Sakic(notes) had 34 for Stanley Cup champion Colorado in 1996.

Pittsburgh also went 2 for 3 on the power play, with Red Wings coach Mike Babcock calling the interference penalty on Jonathan Ericsson(notes) that led to Gonchar’s game-winner.

“They got the power play in the third period and we didn’t,” Babcock said.

Most of all, the Penguins stood up to the Red Wings even after the defending champs answered Talbot’s first goal with scores by Zetterberg and Johan Franzen(notes). Those goals briefly quieted an all-in-white crowd that could sense it might be watching the Red Wings effectively secure their fifth Stanley Cup since 1997.

“They were desperate. They played hard,” Detroit’s Brad Stuart(notes) said. “They took it up a notch—they had to.”

So far, the finals have featured the same scenario as last year. Detroit wins the first two at home, then loses a tight Game 3 in Pittsburgh. Last year, the Red Wings took a 3-1 lead by winning Game 4 in Pittsburgh, which allowed them to survive a three-overtime Game 5 loss at home before they finished off Pittsburgh in Game 6.

But the Penguins have played better in each of the three games than they did last spring and, the Red Wings understand the hard part is yet to come.

“I think in the two at home, one of them could have gone the other way,” Babcock said. “I think this series is where it should be. These are two good teams going at it.”

Or, as Marian Hossa(notes) said, “It’s the Stanley Cup finals and it’s a grind.”

A noisy one, too, for Hossa, who disappointed the Penguins by leaving them after last year’s finals to sign with Detroit. He was booed repeatedly by Pittsburgh fans, although Hossa said he was so focused on playing that he barely noticed.

Especially not with the Penguins sneaking back into the series.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Hossa said.

I just don`t understand why sports can`t be played with dignity and respect to both teams. Why does someone always have to SUCK. No wonder our children have no respect, what with everyone dissing someone every chance they get. So what if some teams play better. Also why do some football teams have to hotdog after a touchdown. You did it, don`t make an a** of yourself just bow gracesously. Try to give younger fans some positive feedback on how to act at games not teach negativity.

hockeygirl, yeah I had some fun here playing with the kids for a while, but as you can see from their posts, all intelligence and hockey talk disappeared. It is amazing to think that these may actually be adults. Notice I said "may" be.....

Now to hockey...Big game tonight. I really hope the Wings win tonight. It would be awesome to have a chance to win the Cup on a Saturday night!!! at home!!!!! Go Wings!!!! Lightning Strikes Again!!!!!!!!

Ok, I'll leave to let the kids resume their "yo momma" smack............

disco...your really going to say datsuyk sucks? im sensing a little jealousy here or maybe your nervous he is coming back. either way he doesnt suck he is up for the hart trophy this year which he probably wont win, i think malkin should win it and im from detroit. what malkin did this year was amazing and i have to tip my hat to him. he is unreal but so is dats. i will 100 percent guarantee u that if dats was on pitt you would love him and he would dominate for you guys. oh and dats will out dangle malkin any day though and out hit malkin any day. dats has the most unreal hands in the nhl its hilarious what he does to other players. so dont be jealous the wings have him. i mean he went in like the 6th round the pens had plenty of chances to draft him, sorry man. just be smart about what you say

Zetterberg is a very good player... but you guys better hope that Datsuck can take some of his minutes and can be close to 100% cause the Bingo Game is Ready to roll and he is already starting to look like Richards after the Flyers "overused him"... Sure mention one big hit 5 games ago on a guy with his head down... Haven't seen Kronwell do much cept for chase the puck behind his net and get crashed into by wave after wave of Penguins. Trust me even if Lidstrom doesn't tire... The supporting cast will. Pens own the 3rd Period.... Nuff Said.... and you guys are high if you think that being up 2-1 is nothing more than a gift from the hockey gods.

Disco, do you want to talk about +/- ratings? Well then, Malkin had 113 pts and only +17 (prolly a all time low record for that many pts) and Crysby had 103 pts and only a laughable +3. Haha. Comparatively Datsyuk (I might mention we are beating you w/o the services of) had 97 pts and +34. WOW! And overall Detroit +153 and Pitt had +102. Any way you look at the Wings are the better team and it will be proven AGAIN in the end. Hell, even our Grand Rapids Griffins are outscoring Crysby in the finals, LOL.

#1047 hey hey hockeyclown - This kind of intelligent, insightful and respectful message does true hockey fans proud, and puts to shame all the bashers and flamers out there. You are among the best of the Red Wings fans who've been posting on this board, certainly - and you could teach a few Pens fans something about class, too. Thank you, thank you - you've restored my faith in Detroit fans, and you are a credit to the team you love. All that being said - GO PENS!!

Disco, you're HIGH! Zetterberg had his best game of the playoffs last game and was flying around everywhere. Yeah, he's gotten hit, but he's also scored, gotten points and completely negated crosby. Clearly our 2nd best forward is better than yours...although NOBODY in the Eastern conference would ever have the balls to admit it. Wimpy and weak Detroit hits? Pleeeeeeease show me a single Pens hit by someone on your current roster that is more deadly than the Havlat hit last series. LOVE to see it. You had a good game but if you think you're going to tire out THE BEST PLAYER IN THE NHL, Nick Lidstrom, you've got another thing coming. Congrats on the scoring titles Malkin (and Crosby)! Be sure to put that Art Ross trophy where you planned on putting your Stanley cups.

Monster Wings fan but I've been impressed with the Pens this year. It is clearly a better squad than they brought to the dance last season, but I still think the Wings will win it. That said, it's the first time in a few years that I've seen a team actually compete with the Wings and not just come up with a lame and cheap strategy to stop us. (like the crazy obstruction, 10,000 blocked shots, non-stop bitching about officiating, forcing Homer into goalie interference, etc). Kudos to the whole pens team. I finally realized what a good Pens team was in game 3 - not because you guys won, but I found myself continuing to say "quit giving up the puck wings, get it out of the zone". I'd been blaming the Wings for playing bad hockey the entire time, but finally realized that's how we make other teams feel...like THEY are screwing up. Most times, it's just us having the players and the system that makes em look stupid (just like the Pens have done to us). I think two parts of the game have been really big: 1. The Pens play behing the Wings net 2. The Pens forecheck deep in the Wings zone to stop the first short pass of our usual deep zone breakout. If Datsyuk comes back, it'll be a real bummer for you Pens fans after all the positive momentum. Just imagine having Malkin out for the first 3 games then getting him back. Dats is an MVP candidate (and I think the clear winner based on both defensive and offensive stats). I just want to see good hockey with no reason to @#$% about the refs, much like game 2. Z didn't cover that puck (like he did in game one on Ozzies back) so quit saying we got lucky breaks for 2 games. Pens got the shaft on the no-call penalty shot in game one, Wings got the shaft on too many men in game 3. Game two was very well called. Let's hope game 4 goes down in history as one of the best ever. GOOD HOCKEY!!! and quit pissing yourselves about the refs and lets talk hockey...

I hope the (-13) 38 year old plays Kris Draper plays... Again, this ain't last years Penguins... These guys will grind you down... And that includes Lidstrom and Zetterburg... I am starting to see that distant totally exhausted look in Zetterburg's eye... Please oh Please keep matching him against Crosby Guerin and Killer Kunitz.... he is getting hit more than puck.... I am pretty certain neither Franzen nor Rafalski can remember their middle names anymore. Holmstrom just looks OLD.... am I forgetting anyone? 38 hits... when was the last time you saw 38 hits? and not the wimpy Detroit Redwings hits... more like patty cake. I am talking "knock you into next week" hits.... where's Kronwell... oh yeah he's standing behind Jordan Staal... Didn't see him... Wings look TIRED.

@1040 didn't the NHL players just vote Crosby the biggest whiner? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3atOIUzMb0 Still, it's getting a bit old that some Red Wings fans can only come up with this against your team.

Wow. I'm in Detroit. I'm a Detroit fan. But the Lions friggin' suck, and the Steelers are sweet. If you're going to say something bad about someone's home team, keep two things in mind. 1.) Make sure the team you're saying sucks actually sucks. 2.) Make sure your own home team doesn't suck worse than the team you are trying to dis. There's also a third thing to make sure of, make sure your home team isn't the Detroit Lions.

Clue phone for the Crosby-haters out there - Mark Messier has chosen Crosby, along with Jarome Iginla and Zdeno Chara, as a finalist for his Leadership Award which "recognizes a player as a superior leader in hockey and as a contributing member of society." Wow! According to some so-called hockey fans on this message board, Messier must be smoking crack! Doesn't he know that Crosby is just a big ol' whiner and he sucks and is the worst thing to ever happen to the NHL? Maybe he's in Bettman's pocket. Maybe he doesn't know what he's talking about. I mean, why would he? He only won five Cups with the Oilers (the last one without Gretzky) and one with the Rangers, not to mention a Conn Smythe, two Hart Trophies and two Lester B. Pearson awards. So maybe he DOES know what he's talking about, and maybe Crosby doesn't suck quite as much as some people like to say he does. Just sayin'.

@ 1021 thank you! finally some logic and reason on here. This has been a fantastic series with the level of play equal on both sides, of course when the games are played this close it comes down to luck and yes detroit had more in games 1 and 2 and pit finally got the edge in that in game 3. All the fan boys on these blogs are ruining what is one the best series we have seen in a while and why would anyone want their team to sweep? There is no more hockey for months after this! Freaking fan boys get over yourselfs the red wings or penguins organizations do not care about you, you are in love with a symbol, you all are as bad as religous zealots can't use that brain to think.

just like last year, it will be nice when the Wings go up 3-1 in the series. This time however, they will win it in Detroit.

Are the Penguins good? Yes, but the result will be the same as last year. Where is Cindy Crosby by the way? Ummm, shut down!
