4th Brigade

From the men surplus to requirements for the 1st Division, the 4th Brigade of infantry was formed and offered for service to Great Britain on 3 September 1914. Like the 3rd Brigade, the 4th was also a composite brigade, with its units coming from all the Australian states, including the: 13th Battalion from New South Wales, 14th Battalion from Victoria, 15th Battalion from Queensland and Tasmania and 16th Battalion from South Australia and Western Australia. The 4th Brigade had a certain reputation as being somewhat difficult behind the lines but it also came to be known as a most effective fighting unit.
