REGARDED as one of the game's strict disciplinarians, McGarry took over the United hotseat following a spell coaching the Saudi Arabian national team.

He was unable to stop the slide into the Second Division following Richard Dinnis' brief spell at the helm, and tried to put his own stamp on the team by bringing in a host of new faces.

The 1979/80 season was probably his best in charge of the club with Peter With banging the goals in, but when the promotion charge faded he eventually left the club.
