Aerobars are an awesome adaptation to the standard bicycle. Not only do they allow for a more aerodynamic profile, they are really comfortable.

However, when riding in the aero position the head is tucked and the rider cannot see the way ahead. A Bicycle Periscope will increase a cyclist's awareness.

It would be located at the centre axle of the handlebars. Riders would nestle their heads into the periscope, and see the reflected image of the road ahead (as well as a rear view image).

Goes with the periscope quite well, I think. [Ling, May 01 2007]

[Looking through the periscope, it's easy for the salmon to check that there aren't any bears lurking dangerously close to the water, and, suitably reassured, he contentedly continues to pedal his bicycle downriver.]

Wouldn't the presence of the periscope rather negate the point of adopting an aerodynamic posture on the bicycle?

I would suggest that a more elegant solution would be to sit upright and wear a large top hat beneath which the periscope is concealed. Hmmm, sounds familiar!

Many years ago I saw a photo of a pair of glasses with prism/mirrors on the front. They were for cyclists, but they may have just been a joke.

Nowadays, older folks buy Bedspecs Prism Glasses, which are for watching TV while lying flat back. A pair of those could be modified for cyclists.

I found this in a patent application: "To permit a complete head-down aerodynamic tuck for racing, a pair of mirrors is provided within the exoskeletal handlebar so the rider can keep his or her head down in an aerodynamic profile but still see forward. The use of two mirrors provides the actual view rather than a reverse image." No mention of a rear view.

Oddly enough, this periscope, even if it is quite useful, may be rejected by a lot of serious cyclists just because it's different. Some riders are incredibly conservative, and won't use rear-view mirrors, even.

[baconbrain] Wouldn't those images be upside down?

       Only in Australia.

Which images, out of all the stuff I mentioned?
