THE STRAIN (Book Review)

THE STRAINIn THE STRAIN, the creator of PAN'S LABYRINTH, Guillermo del Toro, teams up with author Chuck Hogan to write a new kind of vampire tale.  Going away from the sex and romance part of your typical vampire novel, THE STRAIN is a book more about un-deadly disease than monster myth.  With the wretchedly detailed and lurid descriptions of blood and guts similar to that of Michael Crichton's and the scare factor, nightmare inducing power rivaling that of Stephen King's, del Toro and Hogan make THE STRAIN the next great vampire must-read.  This novel will take what you thought you knew about bloodsuckers and turn it upside-down and inside-out, almost quite literally, while simultaneously making you cringe with horror and disallowing you to stop reading.

VILE THINGS (Book Review)

vile_260Last week, I received a copy of VILE THINGS: EXTREME DEVIATIONS OF HORROR in the mail from Comet Press. The book is an anthology style collection of stories from a variety of writers including Ramsey Campbell, Graham Masterson, and CJ Henderson. MONSTER PARTIES AND GAMES (Book Review)

MPAGimageHaving always been on this mission to find the best film companion piece, I constantly search for something that will take me further inside the insanity after I have seen the evil curse lifted, the ghosts ceasing to exist and the dead blown to bits.  Always wanting to dive into the film's world, I feel a certain loss when those final credits have rolled and the screen fades to black. Whether it is a movie companion book or magazine, trivia or video game, cartoon or TV series spinoff, I am constantly seeking out the next greatest thing that can take me deeper into the world of that specific horror or science fiction based film.  Well boils and ghouls (cue spooky organ music) look no further because Fango just got a first look at the fifteen film-based activity companion book, MONSTER PARTIES AND GAMES

AFRAID (Book Review)

afraidbookreviewthumbSafe Haven. Author Jack Kilborn’s setting for his latest novel AFRAID (Grand Central Publishing) is certainly the biggest literary oxymoron in the annals of toponomy. This sleepy little American hamlet may be home to a few thousand innocent souls, truly off the map for most killers—but these villains aren’t your random heinous sort; they’d make Charles Manson proud indeed. This is Serial Killing with a capital S.

SOULTAKER (Book Review)

In order for a horror novel to work, the author must strike a balance between realistic and fantastic elements. Bryan Smith skews heavily toward the latter in his new release, SOULTAKER, which has moments of great imagination but too often emphasizes shock over substance.
