He has publicly referred to his successors, Courier-Journal sports columnists Pat Forde and Rick Bozich, as “Tweedledum and Tweedledee,” and he has called Louisville a “lousy sports town.” In a community that likes to play nicey-nicey in public, Billy Reed, the doyen of Kentucky sportswriters, is willing to criticize — even members of his own profession and the city where he lives and works.
