TV ratings: Gay kiss lifts EastEnders to nearly 8m

The controversial gay kiss between EastEnders characters Christian Clarke and Syed Masood was watched by 7.9 million viewers on BBC1 on Friday, 18 June.

EastEnders' latest controversial storyline, which will see Masood struggle with his sexuality and Muslim faith, helped the BBC1 soap pull in an average of 7.6 million and a 38% share between 8pm and 8.30pm.

Ratings peaked at 7.9 million for the final 15 minutes, when the kiss between Clarke and Masood took place, according to unofficial overnight figures.

ITV1's The Fat Bribe Revisited: Tonight drew 2.6 million and a 13% share between 8pm and 8.30pm, while BBC2's Gardener's World gained 2 million and a 10% share in the 8pm hour.

Channel 4's A Place in the Sun: Home or Away picked up 1.1 million and a 5% share in the 8pm hour, with a further 187,000 on Channel 4+1. Channel Five's Air Force Afghanistan claimed 800,000 and a 4% share in the same slot.

A new series of BBC1 drama Hotel Babylon won the 9pm slot with 4.3 million and a 20% share over an hour, while a repeat of ITV1's Doc Martin gained 4.1 million and a 19% share in the same slot.

Channel Five's US drama NCIS picked up 1.5 million and a 7% share in the 9pm hour, with BBC2's My Life in Verse: Malorie Blackman picking up 600,000 and a 3% share.

Channel 4's Big Brother eviction show pulled in 2.2 million and a 10% share in the 9pm hour; while the second episode, featuring the live interview with evicted housemate Cairon Austin-Hill, drew 2 million and a 13% share between 10.35pm and 11.05pm. A further 195,000 and 159,000 watched the two instalments respectively on Channel 4+1 an hour later.

BBC1's Celebrity MasterChef drew 3.5 million and a 16% share between 8.30pm and 9pm, while earlier BBC2's Mastermind final claimed 1.3 million and a 7% share in the 7pm hour.
