Tuesday Ratings: NBC’s America’s Got Talent Returns To Win, ABC’s Superstars Hardly Super

The season 4 premiere of America’s Got Talent was more than enough to push NBC to the top of the heap with an average 18-49 demo 2.6 rating for the night. The premiere of ABC’s The Superstars was anything but super.

Anchoring the win for NBC, the America’s Got Talent premiere demo rating was still down 14% from its season 3 premiere last June. In today’s broadcast world though, down 14% is the new up! Limping towards its finish tonight, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! fell to its lowest rating of the summer.

Going all new last night, ABC was still mired in 4th place. Besides the slow start for Superstars with only a 1.6 demo rating, a new episode of Better Off Ted was completely unwatched (Who will be the first to comment “But it was hardly promoted, I didn’t even know it was on!!!!”?), and Primetime: Family Secrets also delivered its lowest original rating ever.

CW’s Hitched or Ditched was flat in the 18-34 demo from last week. Fox’s Mental was down almost 20% in the 18-49 demo from last week.

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

I wonder what ABC was looking for with Better Off Ted. It barely did better than the reruns. And as usual the episode was really funny and no one noticed.

  2. EnBeeSee says:

Good for NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

  3. Hot Pocket says:

NBC is so damn glad Got Talent is back b/c everything outside of the Stanley Cup Finals has been abysmal for them. Samething can be said for ABC which is having the worst summer season on record for the alphabet. The decision not to air Superstars behind Wipeout hurt them. Superstars is way better than Wipeout as I love how that model treated TO at the end of the episode after they lost. Great drama there.

As for Ted, why air it anymore? Its done. SS got almost 3 million viewers on a Friday and its already gone.

  4. Steve says:

    Nice numb3rs for NBC!

  5. OpeningGuy09 says:

America’s Got Talent is the best of the reality competitions. I love that X. I think they should merge the American version with the Britian version next year and combine audiences and interest. That would be an amazing worldwide TV experience.

  6. Bill Gorman says:

Hot Pocket, Ted’s been renewed for 2009-10 (although surprisingly to me, and I think a mistake), and they’ve got extra episodes in the can from last season that they seem to want to use in the summer. Not that it will do ABC or the show any good.

  8. Hot Pocket says:

Bill, I agree the show itself won’t get any new large amount of viewers but people do like it and from what I heard its a quality show worth holding onto but its a nitch show at best.

ABC really has to experiment more with their comedies in both camera types as see if one hits for them. They may have to start over promoting the comedies on their network and get that audience back to their network.

  9. Steve says:

and why don’t you post UNI numb3rs?

  10. Bill Gorman says:

  11. Bill Gorman says:

Steve, we decided there just wasn’t the interest (based on comments and traffic) in individual Univision show ratings to post them during the summer.

  12. John says:

The Superstars is not a bad show, just not really prime-time material. It belongs on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the off season, around two or three in the afternoon.

  13. Vetinari says:

BoT was great last night. I’m not sure why it doesn’t do better. I think a few ads introducing the characters or actors might help.

  14. Joe R says:

I have a feeling that wednesday is going to be a fight to win ( America Got Talent and So u think u can dance)

  15. Alex says:

I’m sure I’ll end up regretting asking this but what is The Superstars?

  16. Anonymous says:

The Superstars was AWFUL – can’t believe I even wasted time watching that.
AGT was surprisingly good last night, and definitely worth my while IMO. Glad it did so well.

Superstars, on the other hand….wouldn’t be surprised to see it nosedive next week.

  17. Bill Gorman says:

Alex, a remake from the 70’s “Wide World of Sports” era, where atheletes/celebrities from various sports compete in “junk” sports events.

  18. gmyers says:

    9:30 ABC Better Off Ted 0.8 2 0.6 2 1.870

This is just so amazingly bad!!!

  19. Hot Pocket says:

That’s why ABC needs to open up an afternoon block dedicated to programs like this. They already run Wipeout reruns there.

My favorite part of Superstars was TO and Joanna where she swore at him. She was heated after they lost. TO was like, “I feel sorry for her boyfriend”.

  20. Julia says:

ABC runs Wipeout reruns in the afternoons? Where?

  21. The_1337 says:

Hot Pocket, if you actually watch the show, you would know it is not a niche show and has very broad appeal and is just as good as the comedies on CBS and NBC.

  22. cool says:

I’m sure ABC will expand Superstars next week.

  23. Tanner says:

It says in the paragraph that AGT had an average 2.6 demo 18-49 rating….but AGT got a 2.9 rating at 9:00 and 3.6 at 10:00?? How does that average to a 2.6?

  24. Julia says:

Tanner, that’s the average for the whole night for NBC.

  25. Shem says:

Go NBC! Better off Ted IS Better off dead…

  26. josh says:

Not bad for America’s got talent, though i think the premier of Britians Got talent did about the same in the UK which has allot less tv viewers !!

  27. Marc says:

The only reason that I will get to see BETTER OFF TED was because my PVR is set to record “only new episodes” of the show. I was suprised to see it sitting there, but excited.

On a side note. Has there ever been a break out show aired in the summer besides a game show or reality tv.

It doesn’t seem to be the place to score big. Example, Surving surbia dropped more than half its viewers. Its not because of the show content, its because its summer and there is only a few new dramas on tv, so they don’t pull from each other. Swingtown was doomed from the get go. And I don’t think Mental will have a chance. If ABC would have played the GOODE family a little earlier in the season at the tim slot that King of the Hill was giving up, and that crazy no good show took its place(don’t even remember the name). But maybe the adult cartoon crowd would have jumped shift at that time. But seriosuly, intorducing it during the summer has doomed it.

I don’t even think MERLIN will make it through the summer, however if that would have premiered in the fall, it would have been a sure in (not for me, but i am sure there is a big crowd looking for it)

If I was an actor and my show was being picked up for the summer season. I’d keep my resume out there.

  28. Bill Gorman says:

Tanner, I can see how my copy was a bit misleading though, I have clarified it.

  29. Petrie says:

I don’t think that I have more than 15 minutes watching primetime TV since May. I mean I would if there was anything on. Anyways as a side note, I watched National Treasure on USA last night. And they weren’t showing any commercials, not even short little 30 second ones. It was kind of cool.

  30. Kathy says:

I’m sure ABC is going to be really pleased with the Better Off Ted ratings! lol

  31. Master Moron says:

Better Off Ted sucks. Why the hell did ABC renew crap like Better Off Ted and cancel a decent sitcom like Samantha Who? Hell, I would have taken Surviving Suburbia or The Goode Family over Better Off Ted.

  32. Anthony says:

The Superstars was so bad. ABC, you should have renewed The Mole, tsk tsk.

  33. Master Moron says:

By the way, why does the article say that Better Off Ted was completely unwatched? If it was completely unwatched it would have gotten 0.000 million viewers. Perhaps you meant to say practically unwatched.

  34. Julia says:

On a side note. Has there ever been a break out show aired in the summer besides a game show or reality tv.

Off the top of my head, The OC premiered in August. Not exactly a traditional summer show, though, since I believe it was always planned to continue airing it into the fall.

  35. Shawn M says:

Better Off Ted is the best comedy on TV, and might be the best show, period. That, of course, means it’s doomed. I was delighted that ABC renewed it, but I don’t understand why they’re burning off episodes without promotion in the summer dead zone.

I laughed out loud three or four times in the first couple of minutes of last night’s show before I had to pick up my wife at the airport (DVR’d the rest.) Most so-called TV comedies barely elicit a smile from me. 30 Rock is also a favorite of mine, but I get more laughs per minute with Better Off Ted.

    Your LPM may vary.

  36. Keaton says:

I’m going to bite the bullet. I really like Better of Ted and I didn’t even know that it was on last night. Thank you ABC.com!

  37. Michael says:

Mental is doing horribly- it looks like Fox was mental when they thought it would work.

  38. rob says:

ABC barely promoted better off ted and the promotion was very funny. Also it had no Scrubs lead in. ABC would make a mistake cancelling this. Bad enough they cancelled Samantha Who.

I liked the Supestars and will definitely watch again next week.

  39. Bill Gorman says:

rob, you win the award given to the first to claim Better Off Ted was not promoted enough! ;)

  40. rob says:

yea the best time for ABC to promote Better Off Ted is during Wipeout and The Bachelorette. Also during the daytime soaps. ABC couldnt have expected high ratings for it without promotion. But the superstars got a lot of promotion!

  41. thedemonhog says:

And who says that The Mentalist is old-skewing?

  42. Quinn says:

Better of Ted is an excellent show that I’m very glad was renewed. Not sure I understand the strategy of burning these epis in the summer with (since the seal is broken) no promotion though. Fortunately I have my DVR set to record the series and so I didn’t miss last night’s great episode.

  43. huddy80 says:

    WOO-HOO! NBC won last night!!

  44. ABCHasProblems says:

I thought The Superstars would become the next Wipeout for ABC. I knew Better off Ted would do horribly, but I expected Superstars to be head-to-head with NCIS and (in the 9:00 hour) America’s Got Talent. Is it possible for ABC to move Japanese Game Show to 8:00 on Tuesdays (leading into Ted @ 9:00), and put 1-hour episodes of Superstars to Wednesdays @ 9:00 after Wipeout? (ABC originally scheduled Superstars as a 1-hour show.) I can see Superstars getting good retention out of Wipeout.

  45. CP says:

Poor “Mental”. Last night’s episode wasn’t that good anyway.

  46. R.J. says:

I’ve been enjoying better off ted. i don’t understand why it’s numbers are terrible. it’s a great show.

  47. tdot says:

NBC usually does good on Tuesdays at 10:00pm

  48. nemo says:

here’s my theories why america’s got talent’s…. wait summer shows, ratings were down this year

    1. Low viewership rating for it’s lead-in, “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here” (hitting it’s lowest rating yet)
    2. because of the DTV switchover, probably a lot of people here in us haven’t got a converter box yet
    3. a lot of people dvr the show? (maybe)
    4. or people rather watch cable channel shows this summer (possibilities)
    5. broadcast tv is dead? :)

  49. Kermonk says:

Down is the new up? Are you job hunting? *g*

  50. tom says:

conan lost again to letterman tues night. just by .1 and i’m sure he dom’d in the demo. but nbc can’t be that happy. i’m sure they expected to win demo and overall audience from letterman

  51. Rob R says:

No one could have anticipated how truly bad “Superstars” was. I have such fond memories of the original show from the 1970s. This thing was a train wreck, but not in an entertaining way. In a BORING, WHY-AM-I-WASTING-MY-TIME-WITH-THIS way. The low point was anchor John Saunders trying to get excited with his voiceover commentary, obviously recorded after-the-fact while watching an edited videotape, exclaiming, “Oh my God, they are catching a wave!!!!” as he narrated the silly kayak competition at a hotel waterpark.

  52. Matt says:

FOX’s Twitter just said Mental is moving to Friday nights, any idea what they’re going to replace the Tuesday airing with? I thought it was doing decently there…certainly better than it will do on a Friday

  53. Bill Gorman says:

Matt, very interesting. I have no idea what they’ll put on Tuesday, presumably something they figure will do better than a 1.2 demo rating. And once they make the decision to move to Friday, they couldn’t care less how it does there for the rest of its run.

  54. Matt says:

Rob R, you just made me laugh out loud at work with that comment! I kept remarking to myself how ridiculous that guy sounded as I was watching that last night. As if riding a wave in a boat is some miraculous feat!

  55. ryan says:

The Superstars was very very boring i dint understand it and Better Off Ted is dead. Even though it didnt get a good lead in it lost like half of the superstars audience.

  56. Christopher says:

o good more reatily toinght and re runs yawn looks like i am going over to Showtime for Nurse Jackie re run and Weeds………. and that new one NBC has caught my eye at 10 toinght

  57. Dan says:

Really bad news for Ted, 1 millions gotta say something about how it will perform 09-10, especially with the new revamped Scrubs…..

  58. Bill Gorman says:

Dan, the current public stance by ABC is that BOT is a post-DWTS mid-season show, so there isn’t much “Fall 09″ planned for it.

  59. ABCHasProblems says:

Ted and Scrubs will basically be filler shows for ABC (like According to Jim), right? I imagine both shows will be treated just like ATJ: little/no promotion, Tuesdays @ 8 in the spring.

  60. Theoacme says:

My local ABC affiliate in Minneapolis is normally a “promo whore” for ABC programs – and they had lots of mentions and promos of Superstars, and only one throwaway BOT mention, and no promos of BOT that I recall.

As they say, Bill, your mileage may vary – but from what I saw from here, rob was right :(

As for Superstars – ABC would be better off rerunning classic Olympic and Wide World of Sports moments – and I would be more likely to watch. I’d love to see Game 3 of the 1989 World Series shake the TV schedule up :)

  61. Bill Gorman says:

Ted, unlike Scrubs and Jim, has no assured syndication future though.

  62. Chrisjozo says:

Better Off Ted is awesome. Granted last nights episode wasn’t one of the better ones it still deserves more viewers than its getting.

  63. Ben says:

I agree that Better off Ted deserves much better ratings than that.

  64. Mark says:

Why can’t NBC put America’s Got Talent in the fall?

  65. Corey3rd says:

ABC isn’t paying for Superstars. The Atlantis Hotel and Casino funded the project as a big promo. As dumb as the show was – it’s all gravy for the network. And they’ll get to rerun it on ESPN Classic for the next decade.

  66. Carla Carlson says:

I just watched The Super Stars and LOVEDE IT! I can’t wait to watch next week. That BITCH TO was partnered with was shockingly horrible. She was extremely verbally abusive which was uncalled for. She is lucky he didn;t confront her. He took her abusive like a real man. As much bad crap as I’ve heard about him, I guess they belong together. She should be ashamed!

  67. Capnbob says:

Chalk me up as another BOT fan. I wonder if it is split between office workers and not as to the fan base. I’m glad ABC has faith in it. As for Superstars, I didn’t hate it but it was a 1 hr show spread out over 90mins. Capriati having to run a mile or so because she couldn’t find her bike, TO trapped in the netting, Lisa Leslie getting discombobulated was all good fun. Given the dearth of good scripted stuff, at least this competion stuff is a light distraction from the general doom and gloom.

  68. Joshua K. says:

I actually DIDN’T know BOT was on. Interestingly enough, my DVR didn’t record it, either. I’ll have to check into that since it was set up to record the series. Perhaps it wasn’t labeled as new? Oh well. I’m sure I can catch it online.

  69. Riff Rafferty says:

Matt writes, “FOX’s Twitter just said Mental is moving to Friday nights, any idea what they’re going to replace the Tuesday airing with?”

    “Legally Blonde” (June 30)
    “Legally Blonde 2″ (July 7)
    All Star Game (July 14)
    “Hell’s Kitchen” (July 21)
    “More to Love” (July 28-whenever)
