A lost gem: Cole Porter

The New Yorkers, Lilian Baylis Theatre, London (Rated 3/ 5 )

In 1930 Prohibition was the law of the land, so of course everyone in The New Yorkers is one over the eight. The hero is a bootlegger, the heroine runs a speakeasy, and the comic brews up my idea of a health drink (half-whiskey, half-gin, and some stuff that's good for you). On Park Avenue the penthouse-dwellers have the morals of the gutter: a society doctor sneaks around with floozies while his wife paints the town red with men half her age and makes eyes at her daughter's boyfriend. As a character observes, there are two kinds of girls: "those who do and those who say they don't."

Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra/Jansons, Royal Festival Hall, London (Rated 4/ 5 )

After the sunset, a new dawn. There was a kind of poetic symmetry about the pairing of Strauss' Four Last Songs and Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe in the second half of this Mariss Jansons concert with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Straussian sunset was richly evoked in precisely the kind of dusky autumnal colours that are the signature of this splendid orchestra – and if Strauss imagined a dramatic yet lyric voice for his poignant valedictions in song then he had it all in Anja Harteros.
