Auction Action: 50-year-old blingmobile on the block

Some say Sir Bernard Docker lost his job as chairman of Daimler in 1956 because of his wife. Lady Norah Docker thought Daimler needed to add some pizazz, some "bling" if you will, to its staid lineup. So she pushed Sir Docker to make a series of extravagant show cars now known as the Docker Daimlers. And the enormous cost of those cars (as well as some questionable expense reports) cost Sir Docker his position at Daimler.

The final Docker Daimler was the 1955 Golden Zebra. The four-liter coupe featured gold plated exterior trim, an ivory dashboard and, of course, authentic zebra-hide seats. When asked why she chose zebra, Lady Docker replied: "Because mink is too hot to sit on." Haven't we all thought that?

The car was restored in California, and while the correct Kenyan zebra skins were easy to obtain, the ivory dash was replaced with a more elephant-friendly ivory wood.

The car is expected to sell for £120,000 at auction Dec. 4 in London.

More photos after the jump, including one of that wild black and white interior.
