We wanted to go en masse – seven adults and nine children in total – to celebrate a clutch of 40th birthdays, but not spend a fortune. In fact, as discussions became protracted, the budget and timescale diminished. Finally, we were down to one night together: we needed an option that was inexpensive, memorable and wasted no time getting down to business.
