A new series of Channel Five's Revealed strand opened with just over 1 million viewers last night, Wednesday, 24 June, for an episode in which former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie argued that the Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper was an invention of the tabloid press of the day.
Last night's Revealed, Jack the Ripper: Tabloid Killer, which aired in the 8pm hour, had 1.1 million viewers and a 6% share, according to unofficial overnights.
Revealed lost out to BBC2's Today at Wimbledon highlights show at the same time, which pulled in 1.5 million viewers, an 8% share.
Over the 8pm hour on Channel 4, River Cottage was watched by 2.2 million viewers, an 11% share. An additional 281,000 watched on catch-up service Channel 4+1 an hour later.
The 8pm battle between BBC1 and ITV1 was won by the commercial channel, with cop show The Bill averaging 4.6 million viewers over the hour, a share of 23%.
BBC1's Celebrity MasterChef at the same time, in which contestants from previous series including Joe McGann and Linda Barker returned to compete for this year's prize, had an audience of 3.6 million viewers, a 19% share.
Over the 9pm hour the third episode of Sky1's new drama Martina Cole's The Take had an audience of 479,000 and a multichannel share of 2.5%.
This was down on last week's opening episode, which pulled in 648,000 viewers and a 3.3% multichannel share.
Other good multichannel performers last night included America's Got Talent, which gave ITV2 an audience of 456,000 between 9pm and 10pm, and BBC3's Match Day Live coverage of the Confederations Cup, which had an audience of 750,000 between 7pm and 9.30pm.
At 9pm on the main networks, the slot was won by the first of BBC1's new factual two-parter Famous, Rich and Homeless, which had an audience of 4.7 million over the hour, a share of 22%.
On ITV1, Spain: Paradise Lost was watched by 3.6 million viewers, a 17% share.
At the same time on Channel 4, Big Brother had 1.8 million viewers tuning in, a share of 9%. An additional 270,000 watched on Channel 4+1.
BBC2's Nasa: Triumph and Tragedy brought 1.5 million viewers to BBC2 at the same time, a share of 7%.
Five's repeated Clint Eastwood movie A Few Dollars More between 9pm and 11.40pm, averaged 1.2 million viewers, a share of 7%.
Between 10pm and 10.55pm, US drama Ugly Betty returned for a third series with 1.8 million viewers, a share of 14%. An additional 129,000 watched on Channel 4+1.
The BBC News on BBC1 between 10pm and 10.35pm averaged 4.9 million viewers, while News at Ten on ITV1 had 2.2 million viewers.
A repeat of James May's 20th Century on BBC2 between 10pm and 10.30pm was watched by 1 million people, a share of 6%.
