Liberal Senate Leader Nick Minchin says he is counselling colleagues to "keep their cool" in the wake of bad poll results for Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Turnbull has taken a battering in three major opinion polls after a week dominated by the OzCar affair.
