On second thought: Joseph Fauria to transfer out of Notre Dame

As he sifted through the haze and hubbub initially, Joseph Fauria hoped he might continue his college football career at Notre Dame.

That was the plan, he said. But plans can change, and Fauria confirmed Friday night that he will transfer out of Notre Dame and finish that career elsewhere.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame announced that Fauria would not enroll for summer school nor for the fall semester of 2009 for "personal reasons." Irish coach Charlie Weis said he hoped Fauria would return for the spring semester in 2010 and Fauria himself said he hoped to find a way back to South Bend.

In the end, though, Fauria's Irish career encompassed three games. He is expected to seek a transfer to a school closer to his California home.

Brian... wish you would report the entire story, not just that Fauria is transfering. you didnt bother to inform us why hes transfering.

He is transfering not because of the coaching staff, team, players, etc. He has run into an undisclosed issue with the university's campus life. He felt that whatever his punsihment was, it didnt fit the crime. This has him upset so he will transfer to a pac-10 team which will not be on the ND schedule in any of the next 4 years. Possbily Cal.

Brian, you should report the facts, so your readers actually learn something from the article. Other outlets are reporting the full information.

Let's not forget that these are just kids. Large, athletically gifted kids to be sure but still just kids.

Basically it's none of our darn business why the kid is doing what he is doing.

I think if we read between the lines of one of Fauria's recent quotes, we get an insight as to part of why he's leaving. It's pretty clear that he broke some rule, and his quote about not having a chance at an appeal included the phrase "don't they know who I am?" or something similar. Sounds to me like another sense-of-entitlement kid who doesn't want to take responsibility for his own actions. Notre Dame doesn't need that, so I say good riddance.

About Brian Hamilton
Brian Hamilton was assigned to the Notre Dame beat in July 2007 and is curious to see if fans have any interest in what happens to the football team there.

Since joining the Tribune in September 2005, Brian has covered everything from the Illinois high school cheerleading championships to the WNBA to the Final Four and Super Bowl XLI, nearly all of it without embarrassment. In the summer of 2006, he wrote a profile of a plucky, under-the-radar recruit named Jimmy Clausen, giving the kid an infusion of much-needed publicity.

Prior to arriving at the Tribune, Brian spent six years scraping permafrost off his notebook while working in Minnesota at the St. Paul Pioneer Press and mainly covering college football, basketball and the NBA's Timberwolves. This after attending one of the best schools for journalism in America, Northwestern University, and taking full advantage by majoring in English and creative writing while dropping his one journalism class after two weeks.

Brian grew up on the north side of Westfield, N.J., and now lives in Lakeview. He has many leather-bound books and his apartment smells of rich mahogany. Merlin Olsen comes over on occasion.
