GeekDad HipTrax #25

HipTrax

GeekDad HipTrax episode #25 has been scientifically engineered to rock your collective socks. What you do with those socks afterward, however, is your own business. Though I suppose if I was pushed I would probably just suggest washing them.

Cleanliness is next to geekiness!

Here is a list of other things from Greece that are as great as VGO:
1) Zeus, ruler of Mount Olympus
2) the gyro
And that’s it. They are truly that awesome. Experience this first hand via their new II Music release RIOT.

When not ripping it up as a member of titanic hip-hop trio Metamystiks, Inc, Myf is an active contributor to the OverClocked ReMix community. This excellent selection comes to us from OCR’s recent tribute to Namco’s Tales series entitled Summoning of Spirits. And since it’s from OCR, the project – all four discs worth of it – is freely available. Download it immediately and show your support for an amazing group of artists.

GeekDad HipTrax #24

HipTrax

GeekDad HipTrax episode #24 deals with the delicate topics of guitar pop and degrees-of-separation. You see, it begins, as good things often do, with a song from Spokane-based singer-songwriter Glenn Case. From there it proceeds to a classic track from J-rockers Hidari, as remixed by band member Justin Bacon and the aforementioned Glenn Case. Finally, it concludes with a new song from Chicago chip-poppers I Fight Dragons, who have recently launched a hilarious and totally fabricated feud with Hidari.

Witness the intricate musical tapestry I have woven for you enjoyment!

"Ode to Alderaan" by Glenn Case
Glenn Case is a HipTrax favorite due to his boundless talent, his ceaseless devotion to geeky musical experimentation and his dedication to making his songs freely available. Last month he took part in February Album Writing Month – which challenges artists to write, record and produce 14 songs in 28 days – and Glenn even went so far as to solicit song title suggestions from his friends via Twitter. The resulting release, You Deserve Fun Treats, is wholly available for your perusal.

"Clambon (Glenn Case Campfire Sing-along Mix)" by Hidari
Hidari is a three-piece power-pop explosion centered in the prominent port city of Kobe, Japan.  Composed of Hiroshi Ohta, Daisuke Kōzuki and Justin Bacon – the latter of which I know from nerdcore circles – Hidari combine modern rock with retro electronica in a manner most sublime. The band’s second full-length, Wine and Chocolate, is only available as an import, but it is well worth the effort.

"Heads Up, Hearts Down" by I Fight Dragons
I Fight Dragons is Chicago’s foremost (read: only) NES-rock band. This 6-piece blends chiptunes with traditional pop-rock storytelling to create songs that are imminently relatable and just a little bit nostalgic. Decked out in superhero t-shirts and flinging about free copies of their debut EP Cool is Just a Number like so much tuneful confetti, IFD represent all that is good and geeky about the current landscape of American rock.

Nothing to See Here, Folks!

HipTrax

Greetings, faithful HipTrax listeners! Unfortunately, Ken had I had to reschedule this week’s podcasting session due to some conflicting (but hopefully blogworthy) activities. This means we are unable to provide you with your regularly scheduled dose of geeky, family-friendly musical fare.

Fear not, however, as we will instead be bringing you the next edition of the show late this weekend or early next week.

Will we be making this episode extra awesome so as to offset your current disappointment? We will not. But only because our standard level of awesome is the maximum amount allowed by law.

GeekDad HipTrax #23

HipTrax

If episode 23 of GeekDad HipTrax has an obvious theme – which it does – it is that of instrumental music. Likewise, if this edition of the podcast has a partially-obscured, secondary theme – which it does – it is surprises, as each of the included tracks manages to delight in unexpected ways.

Be astonished by:

"Spectacular Clean" by Army of 2600
Armed only with his trusty Synthcart, General Mike fights the good fight in the name of the Atari-faithful. His self-titled, 6-song EP is freely available from VGM Netlabel extraordinaire Pterodactyl Squad, and it boasts a fine collection of chippy, atmospheric, and ultimately satisfying tunes.

"Casino Night (Live)" by The Runaway Five
Even to the ears of avid jazz haters like myself, Canadian ensemble The Runaway Five craft an intoxicating blend of brassy leads and solid, unforgettable game melodies. This song is available for free download as part of game Music 4 All’s Sega Genesis tribute compilation LOSER, and Canadian listeners can catch the band at Calgary’s Jack Singer Concert Hall as a part of the Video Games Live tour on May 15th and 16th.

"CP Violation" as remixed by Antisoc
Mark Ridlin is a Texas nedcore rapper with roots in industrial music. Both of these skill sets – as well as Antisoc’s remixing acumen – are well represented in his 2008 release Anomalous Materials Laboratory. I was also proud to feature Antisoc as a guest remixer on my own 2008 compilation, wherein he took Brad Sucks’s track "Sick as a Dog" into dark and futuristic territory.

GeekDad HipTrax #22

HipTrax

Just in time for your geekiest of Valentine’s celebrations comes HipTrax #22, complete with a trio of dorky love anthems for your listening pleasure. Our podcast likes you. Do you like our podcast? Check yes or no.

This lovelorn episode features:

"Such Great Heights" as covered by Shael Riley
Shael infuriates me by cranking out song after unforgettable song in what at least appears to be a manner most effortless. That being said, the bulk of his music deals with adult themes and thus isn’t exactly family-friendly, but this Postal Service cover is both squeaky clean and holiday-appropriate. Along with his steady stream of cover songs, chiptune numbers, and videogame remixes, Shael is also currently working on his second solo album, Hold Person, and another long-awaited follow-up with his geeky supergroup The Grammar Club.

"Ode to Harry" by Switchblade Kittens
The Switchblade Kittens are a clean-livin’, power-poppin’, co-ed quartet from Los Angeles. In addition to crafting this track, which is widely viewed as the world’s first Wizard Rock song, the band also explores the many facets of fandom, romance, and (occasionally) zombie cheerleaders. Their new album Rebel Princess again mines popular fiction for inspiration, this time the works of chick-lit titan Meg Cabot.

"Take My Heart, Take My Hand" by Lumine Hall
Lumine Hall describe themselves as a "Mother cover band." Their 12-track debut, This Album Stinks, takes the memorable music of the much-beloved Earthbound series and bends it to its own chippy devices. That album is freely available from the Earthbound Crew fansite, as is the Game Music 4 All mixtape Hey! Listen! Volume 1, which also features this romantic little ditty.

You can subscribe to the GeekDad podcast in iTunes (see the button on the sidebar), or directly through the RSS feed. That’s how much we love you.

The HipTrax theme song was lovingly crafted by Snake Eyes. He even signed his name on your card.
