Meat Free Monday: What its supporters say
Monday, 15 June 2009
'This is something anyone can do, it is a tiny thing with a huge impact. MFM is about us all taking control of the environment we live in for the generations to come. Whether you eat meat or not you can be part of this decision to limit the meat industry destroying our planet's resources.' Stella McCartney, fashion designer
Bites: Host a roast with none of the hassle
Sunday, 14 June 2009
If you're like us, summer doesn't mean the end of the hearty Sunday roast. It just means we're more likely to drift off to the garden or park and leave the washing-up till later (ugh). It's – still – the perfect time for friends and family to draw up a chair, have a proper catch-up and eat till they're fit to burst.

Burger kings: Six top chefs serve up their favourite new-wave burgers

History cannot decide whether the first hamburger was created at a Wisconsin county fair in 1855 by one Charles Nagreen, who saw his clients were struggling to eat meatballs while walking about, so he flattened one between two slices of bread; or by Frank and Charles Menches from Ohio, who travelled all the county fairs (also in 1855) selling sausage-patty sandwiches, until one day they ran out of sausages and substituted minced beef, in a place called Hamburg, New York. But goodness, they've come a long way, image-wise.
Grills and thrills: Mark Hix takes his barbie to the beach for a seafood feast

A seaside barbecue is great fun and you can get a lot more inspiration from your local fishmonger's slab than from the usual selection of pre-packed sausages, burgers and kebabs in supermarkets. If you have ever eaten fantastic fresh fish by the sea in Italy, Greece or Spain, more often than not it's been cooked over charcoal. I've just recently bought a great portable barbecue, the Coleman Perfect Flow Grill Stove (£69.99), from the Dorset Leisure Centre in Charmouth (01297 560473). It runs on a small gas bottle and folds up neatly to pop in the boot of the car.
Foraging may be all the rage, but can you live for a whole year on squirrels, weeds mushrooms – and garden snails?

It's remarkable how the threat of poverty can focus the mind. It had all started with such promise. After years working in London as a writer, I decided to follow in my grandparents' agricultural footsteps and get back into farming. They had grown hops in Herefordshire, where my family has lived for more than 500 years. My wife, Emma, is a city girl so it took me a long time to persuade her, but eventually she agreed. We found a farmhouse with some land and moved with our children.
