The Navajo are the largest tribe in America. The “number one sacred center” of the Navajo world is Canyon de Chelly (pronounced “de Shay”). It is the second biggest canyon in Arizona and is located on the Navajo Reservation. The canyon system, which consists of Canyon del Muerto and Canyon de Shay, makes up an area of about one hundred miles. Both canyons may be toured. To tour the canyons,
first hire a Navajo guide located at the Visitor Center which is in
Chinle, Arizona. Also, there are group tours which originate from the Thunderbird Lodge in Chinle. The local Park Visitor Center has all of the tour information.
