Introducing Maryland
Lucky you: you’ve landed in the aptly named ‘Land of Pleasant Living.’ King Arthur’s wizard to locals (ie ‘Merlin’) is mountains on the one end and a marsh and field checkerboard on the other – straight out of God’s happiest daydream. A blend of Northern streetwise and Southern down-homeness gives this most osmotic of border states an appealing identity crisis. Her main city, Baltimore, is a sharp, demanding port; the Eastern Shore jumbles artsy yuppies, hard-nosed docks and working fishermen; the DC suburbs are packed with aristocrats seeking green space and the poor seeking lower rents. Yet it all works. Who cares about identity when you can kick back with some beer and a bushel (of bluecrabs) and experience the beauty of Chesapeake country?
