Physical Education

Anne Arundel County Public Schools provides a K-12 program in Physical Education, which complies with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Requirements.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (Grades K-5)

The Physical Education Program at the elementary level provides 5 required themes which include Basic Movement, Dance & Rhythms, Manipulatives, Ball Handling and Fitness using the Fitnessgram assessments for Grades 4 & 5.  Supplemental themes include Track & Field, Climbing Wall, Orienteering, and Hoops to name a few.

MIDDLE SCHOOL (Grades 6-8)

The Physical Education Program at the middle school level provides 7 areas of instruction including Fitness and Conditioning, Coordination, Throwing and Catching, Striking, Speed/Timing and Accuracy, Leisure and Dance. In the 8th Grade, students may elect to enroll in a second course titled Team Approach to Sports. Student’s fitness will be assessed using Fitnessgram once during each year a student is in middle school.

HIGH SCHOOL (Grades 9-12)

The Physical Education Program at the high school level provides for the improvement of health and skill related components, physical fitness and the development of individual and team skills.  Lessons created on this level challenge students to set goals for personal fitness and work toward goal attainment.

Fitness for Life I must be taken by all students as part of AACPS graduation requirement and an additional 1/2 credit elective needs to be taken from offered courses in Physical Education and Dance.

Additional Activity based course offering at the High School level include:

  • Personal Fitness and Aerobics

  • Weight Training

  • Team Sports

  • Lifetime Sports and Leisure Activities

  • Walking Wellness

  • Dance for the Athlete

Note:  Each of these offerings can be taken multiple times provided the prerequisite course has been satisfied.

   Additional Lecture-based course offering at the High School level include:

  • Sports Medicine and Athletic Training

  • Recreational Leadership
