    Across the Sea

Chintae finished her meal with the soldiers about to go on duty, giving them, again, another round of encouragement.  The constant howls of the undead, the sharp bitterness of the northern winds and the constant beseigment of their gates gave the men little hope.  She refused to let them lose it.  Chintae made sure each [...]

    A New Land, A New Home - Chapter I

As I finished tending to a cleaning and change of clothing, I could smell delicious rice and some sort of vegetable, as I stepped into the common room. I was rather surprised to see that many things in the room were missing, and that a small crate sat in a corner. I looked at the room, the crate, and then Mother. “Where’s everything, Mother?”
She looked at the floor a moment, before she reached over and placed her hand behind my shoulder, patting my back as she sidled over to sit beside me. I was already worried at this point, for the last time she had done this, it was because of Father’s death. “Raven, the Ulvari have pressed their advance forward, and it will not be safe here much longer. Tanvu is overcrowded with refugees and Grandfather has already departed. Tomorrow morning, we shall be heading to the docks in Tanvu, where we will board a ship to New Tarangor,” she calmly explained as if she was reading off an imaginary list. “In six days we should be able to be settled into a village there called Three Rivers.”

Sightings of Rala - Vsurog Moor

There are those who write poems about the beauty of nature. Others write epic sagas about the exquisite choreography of the martial arts. But there’s hardly anyone who’d even consider writing about this battle. It was dirty, bloody, painful and ultimately unfair. The figure, covered with mud, in the midst of a group of Gorgalok was a large Vulmane bitch, fighting, not just for her life.

More sophisticated writers, had they been forced to describe the scenario, would have at least attempted to enthuse about the joy of battle, and how her excited howl rang in perfect counterpoint to her slashing swords and graceful movements. But alas, I am no poet, and I can only tell things as I saw them. The Vulmane fought viciously, cutting, taunting and even biting; her hoarse cries striving to keep the attention of the Gorgalok, to take their hissing wrath upon herself. This wasn’t because she wished to die. This was because she wished her friends to live.

The Dark Citadel Trilogy - The Emerald Shard

When a small Kojani fishing village is mysteriously invaded by hundreds of Orcs, Tristrum the Ranger takes note. Though warlike in nature, even Orcs wouldn’t risk the might of Tanvu for the worthless baubles found on fisherman. Something else, something larger, had to be going on and Tristrum was going to find out what.

    Delicate Minds

The merchant was being smart with me, and we both knew it. I had to keep playing the game until I got what I wanted.
“So you have seen him, or not?” I asked.
“Of course I have, which is a more expensive matter.” he said.
I sighed. I reached into my pocket, pulled out a few gold. His hand shot out, palm up, fingers motioning. I dropped the gold into his calloused filthy hand. “He was here buying supplies. Seemed to be in a hurry. When I asked him where he was going, he told me he needed to get to Tawar Galan and wanted to know if I knew any ships to gain passage on.” “And what’d you tell him?” I asked. “I told him no, and he went off to the docks. Later Meliard told me he gave him a lift to Tawar. From there, I haven’t heard anything else.”

Satisfied, I flipped my hand at him and left.

    Drums of War

When her village is brutally attacked, a new life begins for Chintae.

“Even deep below where we hid, I could still hear the drums and the sickening silence when they stopped. The children, scared and frightened, huddled around me as we scanned the ceiling overhead, listening to any indication of what was going on. Eerie silence loomed and the panic it caused in the children made it difficult to keep them from keening. But soon, all too soon, was there no need to quiet them. Above, the first sounds of battle erupted.”
