Chelsea's reserve side is primarily part of the development process for young players at the club.

Rather than seasoned professionals not currently selected for the first team, the reserve side is more likely to be packed with teenagers and players in their early 20s, looking to press for a first team breakthrough or a chance to gain experience on loan with a lower division club.

Players who have done well in the youth team will be given the chance to test themselves against older opposition while still eligible to play for both sides.

On occasions, established first team squad members will be given reserve outings, especially when coming back from injury or in need of match fitness.

Other clubs are increasingly fielding young reserve sides although from time-to-time, the Chelsea side will concede many years in experience to their opponents.

Consequently, the reserves are judged on individual performances rather than results as the club looks to nurture future stars - although the development of a winning mentality is encouraged.

The 2008/09 season will see the reserves play 18 games against sides from other Premier League clubs.
