Spanish Surnames Found in the First Book of Baptisms of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe del Paso del Río del Norte, 1662-1688

Compiled by John B. Colligan

The gleanings compiled here are based on a manuscript thesis at Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso/UTEP) prepared by Walter V. McLaughlin, Jr. The thesis was submitted in August 1962, approved for the Department of History by John H. McNeely and Rex W. Strickland, and approved for the Graduate Division by Dean C. P. Sonnichsen. The original book of baptisms for the parish church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe del Paso del Río del Norte (1662-1688) were part of the Cleofas Callero collection of documents pertaining to the Paso del Norte area. Callero allowed McLaughlin to use those records in the preparation of his thesis. Upon Callero's death, the book of baptisms were either lost during a flood, or even possibly sold. In either case, the original documents seem to be lost to us, and McLaughlin's thesis is our sole source at present for this information. A microfilm copy of McLaughlin's thesis is located at the El Paso Public Library, and a copy of the manuscript is at the UTEP Library.

Mr. McLaughlin's transcription has some problems, though he offered the following caveat in his manuscript:

"The original longhand Spanish text was often almost illegible, so that I must beg indulgence in advance for some of the probable errors. In many cases it was just a matter of opinion, and experience, what any individual letter might be. This of course affected the translation.

"Where misspelling occurred within the name of an individual I have retained it, in the thought that it might be a characteristic misspelling which could serve as identification in other records…………The Spanish spelling of Indian names was, in the original, broken up into phonic groups or syllables. This was probably the only way they could get even close to the actual Indian names. In this translation, however, they have been run together as normal names. I have followed the variations used by the Fathers, and have not tried to enforce any uniformity."

To read all the names in any old manuscript is difficult, and likely we will never know how accurate McLaughlin's transcription is. I have typed out the names as McLaughlin also typed them, even though I may know from experience that the names are spelled incorrectly, which may have been the fault of the scribe recording the baptisms. Also, there are gender problems. For example, at times McLaughlin used the word "godmother" and then followed with a masculine given name, e.g. Domingo. I changed godmother to godparent in a number of cases where there was a doubt.

These records give us information as to marriages, births, and the location of various individuals at El Paso prior to the Pueblo Indian revolt of August 1680, making them valuable to both historians and genealogists. I would recommend attempting to amplify these records with information from the following works: Fray Angélico Chávez's Origins of New Mexico Families, and the "Addenda" in El Palacio, his New Mexico Roots, Ltd. (Diligencias Matrimoniales); Sharon Louise Heinz, Roots, The Index, 1994; J. Manuel Espinosa, "The Population of the El Paso Area in 1692," in Mid-America, 12 (New Series 23), 1941; and for the former convicts, see the notations found in Charles Wilson Hackett, Historical Documents Relating to New Mexico, Nueva Vizcaya, and Approaches Thereto, to 1773, v III, Washington, D.C., Carnegie Institution, 1937. Hopefully, some day, the marriage records of the Guadalupe del Paso del Norte parish for the same period as these baptismal records will come to light.
