Neverwinter Nights 2 Review (PC)

...Continued From Page 1

One of the biggest elements in any role-playing game is the plot, and its presentation. The storylines in Neverwinter Nights 2 are solid. They have a few familiar moments, but the majority of the plot is powerful, captivating and original. From the silly side quest of shrinking an enchanted pig early on to the major plot materials in defending your own fort from siege and battling many great monsters along the way. The individual's reactions and responses to you are all determined on the spot, by that character's prejudice towards races, sub-races, particular deities, dress, and alignment. A character's alignment shifts over time, allowing for radical changes in behavior to be noticed by others. These factors and a great deal more make NWN2 one of the best written games in history, both in code and in the English language.

So there are plenty of things about NWN2 that are different from its precursor. Better graphics, a much more robust and option-filled character creation process, plus deeper plotlines, with more twists and better villains help add to an already stellar feature list. Also featured is the ability to gain prestige classes, which were present in later expansions for NWN, but not in large supply. In NWN2, there are seventeen prestige classes for characters to explore, each with its own unique and special abilities, but equally unique and challenging prerequisites to meet.

The very look and feel of what Dungeons & Dragons is supposed to be is captured and crystallized into Neverwinter Nights 2. It is brilliant, fun, easy to learn, extremely challenging when it needs to be, and even has brought back the Neverwinter Nights: the Mod Tool Kit and the DM role in online play. These enable an aspiring Dungeon Master to design their own campaign mod and then run his friends through it while he controls the flow of the story and the gameplay. The tool kit has even been improved, now allowing for textures and skins from different, even opposing environments and settings to be placed in any environment.

There is little ground that has yet to be covered. Neverwinter Nights 2 is one of the only games that will have to reach far to find enough material for an expansion that the original game didn't already cover. The presentation is all there, the gameplay is here in full head-on style, and there's even the plot and characters to go with what is sure to go down as one of the greatest role-playing games ever.
