The following list contains the marked graves of Union Civil War soldiers buried at the Florence National Cemetery in Florence, SC. Most of the soldiers buried in this cemetery died while imprisoned at the Florence Stockade. However, most of those remains are buried as unknowns. Besides those that died at the stockade, many remains were brought from surrounding areas in SC; including Cheraw, Darlington, Marion, Columbia, Hilton Head and Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston. Indiana

FLANSBURG, David - Lieutenant, 4th IN Light Artillery (AKA Michigan City Light Artillery). He saw heavy combat at Stones River and Chicamauga (and probably also at Perryville). At Stones River he commanded a section of guns in support of Sheridan's line in the cedars and limestone outcrops. He was wounded and captured in the first day at Chicamauga while commanding the battery in combat. The battery has a marker on the battlefield deep in the woods at-or-near the spot where he was captured. (It also has another marker and a monument at locations it occupied later in the battle). Died 22 Nov 1864; location unknown. (Possibly a Captain) Grave # 1828. Marked as Lieutenant David Flaneburg. James was captured 15 June `64 near Petersburg, VA. Died 16 Sep 1864 in the Florence Stockade. GAR Post No. 78 - Cross Post, Seneca Falls, NY, chartered 26 Aug `68, named in honor of James and three of his brothers who also died during the war, two of whom were also prisoners of war and died at Andersonville & Libby Prisons. The other died at Harrison's Landing, VA. James is buried in grave # 2916. Leon A. Jessie

GRAY, Charles "Charley" H. - Private, 157th NY Infantry, Co. I.  Enlisted from Sullivan, NY. Mortally wounded 9 April `65 at the Battle of Dingles Mill, near Georgetown, SC. Died later that night in a church in Sumterville (Sumter). Grave # 1816.

HANOBEN, Jno. - Private, 15th NY Infantry. Died 7 Sept 1865. Grave # 23.

*SMITH, Chauncey B. - Sergeant, Co. H, 146th NY Infantry. Enlisted 30 Aug `62 at age 30 from Utica, NY. Mustered in 31 Dec `62 as a Private. Promoted to Sergeant. Captured 5 May `64 at the Wilderness, VA. Died 7 Feb 1865 in the Florence Stockade. Grave # 1809.

WETMORE, Elam B. - Private,  Co. K & B, 85th NY Infantry. Son of Dix Wetmore, 107th NY. He was 19 when he enlisted 26 Aug `61. He enlisted in Co K but soon transferred to Co B. He was captured at Fair Oaks, VA and was paroled after 100 days. Captured again 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. He was shot on Oct 6, 1864, near Florence while trying to escape from the train transporting them to Florence. He and Private Ira Deyo, also of the 85th NY had vowed to escape together. Deyo made it away, but Wetmore was spotted and shot. Later, Deyo was recaptured. Eleven years later, Deyo returned to Florence to attempt to find his friend's body. He located a black woman who surprisingly remembered exactly where the body had been buried in an unmarked grave next to the railroad. Deyo had him reinterred in the National Cemetery on 12 March 1875. Grave # 2965.

Pennsylvania

*BUDWIN or Baduine, Florena - A Philadelphia woman disguised as a man. Both her and her husband were captured and had been held captive at Andersonville, where her husband was killed. She was transferred, along with other prisoners, to the Florence Stockade. Her identity as a female was discovered by a Confederate doctor. She was then removed from the stockade. She helped to care for the sick, but died of pneumonia 25 Jan 1865 at the age of 20. Grave # D-2480. (At this time, neither the identity of her nor her husband can be confirmed.)
