Former Lumberton Football Player, One of Two Dead
Two area men are dead tonight after a horrific wreck early this morning on EasTex freeway.
Witnesses say three men on motorcycles were popping wheelies and traveling at excessive speeds when one struck the rear of a van on the highway 105 overpass around 3 a.m.
That accident caused the other two motorcyclists to lose control and crash.
Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and a third is reported in serious condition at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Police say the three were not wearing helmets.
The two dead men have been identified as 21-year-old Jacob Holmes, and 19-year-old Cru Marlowe both of Lumberton.
The 19-year-old injured man, also from Lumberton, has not been identified.
Both young men who passed away in the accident were very well known in the community.
Jacob Holmes and Cru Marlowe were good friends and both were heavily involved in sports at their high schools: Jacob at Warren High School and Cru an all district player at Lumberton High.
Friends and family saying the two became friends through their mutual love of motors on the road.
Funeral arrangements have not been made yet for either of the young men.

Trying to avoid the initial collision, the operators of the two other bikes swerved.
One of the other motorcycles flew over the median and struck a southbound pickup, but the rider had already fallen off.

The occupants of the van and truck were not hurt.
While the southbound side of Eastex was also closed for a few hours this morning, that side is back open for traffic now.
