Former Lumberton Football Player, One of Two Dead

Andy McCall
Bryan Rupp

Two area men are dead tonight after a horrific wreck early this morning on EasTex freeway.

Witnesses say three men on motorcycles were popping wheelies and traveling at excessive speeds when one struck the rear of a van on the highway 105 overpass around 3 a.m.

That accident caused the other two motorcyclists to lose control and crash.

Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and a third is reported in serious condition at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Police say the three were not wearing helmets.

The two dead men have been identified as 21-year-old Jacob Holmes, and 19-year-old Cru Marlowe both of Lumberton.

The 19-year-old injured man, also from Lumberton, has not been identified.

Both young men who passed away in the accident were very well known in the community.

Jacob Holmes and Cru Marlowe were good friends and both were heavily involved in sports at their high schools: Jacob at Warren High School and Cru an all district player at Lumberton High.

Friends and family saying the two became friends through their mutual love of motors on the road.

Funeral arrangements have not been made yet for either of the young men.

Previous story version from mid-day Thursday, August 27, 2009:

UPDATE: The Beaumont Police Department has identified the victim's from Thursday morning's double-fatal accident.

Deceased: Jacob Holmes, Age 21, of Lumberton
Cru Marlowe, Age 19, of Lumberton

Injured: 21 year old former Kountze man now showing a Winnie address

Previous story from early Thursday, August 27, 2009:

Beaumont Police Ofc. Randy Stevens says the three bikers were racing on the northbound side of the freeway around 2:00 this morning when one of the motorcycles slammed into the back of a minivan.

Trying to avoid the initial collision, the operators of the two other bikes swerved.

One of the other motorcycles flew over the median and struck a southbound pickup, but the rider had already fallen off.

He and the one who slammed into the van were pronounced dead on the scene. The third motorcyclist was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

The occupants of the van and truck were not hurt.

While the southbound side of Eastex was also closed for a few hours this morning, that side is back open for traffic now.

People quit trying to blame others for this misfortune!! Sure the guy feels bad enough... You people HAVE TO REALIZE... THESE BOYS MADE A VERY BAD DECISION TO SPEED!! At that speed NO ONE NOT EVEN THEM COULD CONTROL what happened. At that speed the driver probably didn't see them until it was TOO LATE!! You need not look for answers in blame... Look at the facts.. Fact is it was in WEE hours of the morning and the fact is THEY WERE SPEEDING. This unfortunately is the CAUSE of the accident-SPEED!

It was tragic and unavoidable, where were the police? They should have been there to slow them down. Plus, why was the van blocking the lane, it's almost impossible to turn a motorcycle at 150 mph!! The families should sue the van driver and the driver of the truck.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of these young men. I also pray that the motor cycle rider that road our bumper, right of the corner of our auto next to the center line the other day has seen this and will possibly go take a riding coarse to learn how to ride a MC the correct way. If we had to brake even the slightest bit you would have been reading about him. He not only did this to use but all the other cars he got behind. Please learn from this tragic event.

I am heartbroken over this. 2 lives taken from us at such an early age. No matter if they were in the wrong or not, we will still miss these boys. I dont know them, but I still hurt for their families. Everyone needs to pray for these families. Pray that they are able to get through one of the toughest times in their lives. Im sure some of their friends and family will need our strength now. NOT OUR OPINIONS! Those you could keep to yourself.

I pray for the families of these young men. Also, I pray for the friends lost of the people who are being so negative; I bet the deceased friends would want you to feel remorse for these lost lives-especially being that they died in such a similarly tragic way. I'm sorry that you feel your friends weren't honored properly, but please don't pass that disgrace on to another family.

It is tragic but I agree with others, it was foolish. It could have killed innocent people who such as myself are driving home from work around 2 am. I am a single mother and would hate to have my son left without a mother due to childishness. People that ride bikes are always complaining about people not paying attention to them on the road.. well it s hard to pay attention to someone who passes you goin 90 mph.People on bikes need to be cautious to other drivers..and responsible.

Thursday, Aug 27 at 11:44 AM me wrote ...

It is horrible that these men were killed, but they could have killed innocent people by doing this foolish stunt. No one seems to think about that. The motorcycle flew over the median in the oncoming traffic. It could have gone through someone's windshield and killed them instantly. What about that? They didn't think about that. Actually, they didn't think at all or they would probably still be alive. My thoughts and prayers are with their families.

Thursday, Aug 27 at 11:42 AM Lacy wrote ...

Ok, So first off Mr. Griffin, If the media decided to put your friends criminal record out there, there is no reason to take it out on the families that lost their children! And just b/c others ask rude and unnecessary questions, doesnt mean you have to be as low as other ppl.

Thursday, Aug 27 at 11:35 AM Bman wrote ...

Well Mr. Griffin, people do these days start asking questions way to soon, for the record. I personally think it wrong, but these kids are barely out of school, and still very much still learning to become adults... The one last week was late 20s, and should be responsible enough to know NOT to drink and drive.

Well Mr.Griffin, i cant agree or disagree with your comment. I will say I read the post on the last accident, and there some of the most heartless things I read about your friend. It makes me so mad to see comments like a couple of these!! These were young kids who may not have made a wise decision but I don't think there are too many of us that can say we didn't do crazy things when we were young. These kids also have families and friends who love them dearly and who's lives will never be the same. I thank God that I survived some of the decisions that I made when I was younger and that my son survived some of his.
