This is a combined fanfiction index and discussion thread, where you can locate your favorite fanfiction and participate in discussion about our favorite farmboy and his redhead! More new features will be added as the SJRS leadership team comes up with exciting things to keep you up-to-date on the best 'ship in the Star Wars fandom! 	I think they would want to make sure they were as involved in Ben's life as possible. And I guess that is one of the reasons the current EU story line doesn't satisfy me very much. I don't see Luke and Mara being so distant with Ben and the events of his everyday life. But maybe that perception is my own prejudices about L/M coming out. Actually, I think Mara would be a stricter parent than Luke, especially in those issues not involving the Force. Both would be equally strict when it came to Force matters, but I think Mara would be the "enforcer" on such issues as bed times, brushing his teeth, doing his homework, keeping his room presentable, etc. Luke would be more easy going on those matters. 	I think that they would be aware of the "celebrity" factor and try to give him as normal a childhood as possible. Both Mara and Luke spent their childhoods as "hidden children," whereas Ben has been in the spotlight since he was born. It would be a challenge to give Ben the ability to connect to ordinary people. In that light, some of the more recent characterizations of Ben seem rather realistic. He seems to be seeking out the general public for advice and direction, blending with "common folks," as much as turning to his mentors and parents. I'd agree with VaderLvr64 that Mara is the enforcer. She's the one who grew up in a militaristic, efficient environment, whereas Luke was the dreamer chafing under his uncle's rules. If Ben wants something, Mara says "no," then Ben asks Dad, who gives in and tells Ben not to tell his mother. -----signature----- Never tell me the odds. UConn: Huskies forever! 	Hmmm … I don’t have any children on my own so I’m rather careful when commenting to this one, especially when it comes to Luke’s and Mara’s behavior towards the child Ben (up to age 8 or 10). I always assumed that there wouldn’t be too many conflicts between Mara and Luke here anyway, although I think that it might have been easier to Luke to understand and communicate with Ben being a toddler or a young child in primary school. I hope this comes out understandable right now, but at stage I would have imagined that Mara might have needed Luke as a facilitator in order to overcome her own rather military upbringing and learn to deal with a child’s behavior even if it defies logic on the first view and express the unconditional love she might feel but does not know how to show in difficult situations. In fact, I believe it would be easier for Luke at this point to make Ben go and brush his teeth or clean his room while Mara would run into much more resistance than she’d expected no matter how good her intentions would be. On the other hand, I strongly believe that this would turn as soon as Ben would reach the age of a teenager. In my imagination he will grow much closer to Mara by then but have a rather distant relationship to Luke for some time. In order to clarify, I’m not talking about things like making him doing his homework, going to bed at a certain time or cleaning up his room. I must admit it is a miracle to me why some kids do and some don’t … (Personally I never did, not for my dad, of which I wished I wasn’t his daughter and of course not for my mom whom I loved dearly) I believe Luke and Mara will run into the same problems every parents do, just dependent on how Ben decides to be. I just have the feeling that Luke has too much of a teacher in him by now and feels his own responsibility as a role model. I strongly believe that even then Mara will have exactly he same goals, but it might be much easier to talk to him and get her point through considering her dark humor and her logic. I just have this scene between Anakin and Mara on my mind while they are on Dantooine together…. Somehow I feel this could work the same between her and Ben though, if she only tried (just forget LotF and DN). Okay, I will stop here … I feel you are going to say I misunderstood the original question anyway, since you asked about wishes that might be different and therefore could cause a conflict. I just feel they both wish that Ben becomes a rather happy person, who is able to deal with his heritage and who does not feel that this is a burden his is not able to take. I although think, that they both wish that, since he is strong in the force is going to decide to use his abilities and serve the galaxy as good as he can and that even with all this as background he still stays himself and develops his only personality… I said enough I guess…before you are going to slap at me, please remember, I am a rebel a heart and like I mentioned in the beginning I do not really know what I am talking about. 	I tend to go with the current majority on this one. Luke would definitely be a "okay-but-don't-tell-your-mom" kind of dad. It just doesn't fit with his personality to be a strict disciplinarian after his upbringing with Uncle Owen. I think he'd try to be as understanding as possible and probably go overboard sometimes, almost to the point of being a pushover--the exception being with Force matters. That fear of Daddy Vader's legacy is always going to be hanging over his head. He might even be overbearing in that regard. Mara, on the other hand, would definitely be in charge of things like bedtimes, bathtimes, and other practical issues of parenting. 	With our kids, I know that I have what I think Luke's attitude would be, and my husband approaches matters as I suspect Mara would. He is the enforcer and I am the nurturer. That's just how our personalities work. I think that Luke would find it more natural to nurture (and being a teacher would really enforce that) and Mara would find it easier to be the one to set parameterers and guidelines. Though I really don't think they'd be in too much disagreement over HOW to raise Ben. 	Fantab topic!!!!!! I also believe Luke and Mara would balance each other quite well. I also see her as an enforcer. I don't see Ben's relationship with either parent growing distant over a small thing or just as a matter of "growing up". I see it happening as a result of a major philosophical disagreement he has with both of them. Hopefully, they can all work to prevent that or catch it before it gets too out of hand. Now, this little wrinkle I'm gonna throw in the mix 'cause I'm a mush fanatic. When it comes to dating, what kinds of ... not rules exactly, but boundaries will Luke and Mara set up? I see them as letting him socialize with whomever he wants, as long as they have common interests and values, etc. How important do you all think Force ability will come into play good or bad, pro or con? If Ben wants to marry someone, which parent will push for a long courtship? Probably neither one. Not too long anyway. And, of all the fanfic pairings, who'd you like to see Ben with: Myrta or Jysella?
