C4 wins ratings lottery with Derren Brown stunt

Derren Brown’s lottery stunt on Channel 4 attracted 700,000 more viewers than the regular draw on BBC1 last night.

The 10-minute live special, Derren Brown: The Event Live, won its slot at 10.35pm with more than 2.6m viewers, a 17.2% share. The show was broadcast simultaneously over five channels – C4, E4, 4Music, More4 and Film4 – enabling it to reach 3.1m viewers in total.

Over on BBC1, the National Lottery Draw was watched by just under 2.4m.

In the C4 show, made by Brown’s regular producer Objective Productions, the illusionist appeared to accurately predict the Lottery results. It featured a short live clip of Initial’s BBC1 lottery coverage as part of the stunt.

As Brown’s show began, ITV1 was part-way through The Late News and Weather, which was watched by 2.4m. Other terrestrials posed little competition, with BBC2’s Newsnight attracting 750,000 and Five’s movie, A Perfect Murder, watched by an average of 950,000 between 9pm and 11.15pm.

C4’s subsequent repeat of an earlier special, Derren Brown: The Gathering, picked up 1.68m viewers immediately afterwards at 10.45pm.
