John Mortlock who was Mayor in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Cambridge has been eligible to appoint a mayor since receiving a Royal Charter to this effect in 1207. The first recorded mayor was a Hervey Fitzeustace who served in the year 1213.

The home of Mr Fitzeustace stands to the present day and is now known as the School of Pythagoras in the grounds of St John's College, Cambridge. The stone construction of the building not only explains its survival, but it also indicates a considerable prosperity on the part of Mr Fitzeustace.

A book was written by J. Milner Gray of King's College which contains the biographies of mayors of Cambridge from 1213 through to the passing of the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835.

Due to the many inquiries the mayoral office receives, particularly from family historians, it was decided to research and publish on our website the biographies of mayors who have served from 1835 through to today the year in which Cambridge celebrated the 800th anniversary of the Charter which permitted the appointment of a mayor.
