Benidorm attracts 4.8m

A one-off special of ITV1’s sitcom Benidorm averaged 4.8m (20.9%) at 9pm, enough to give it the edge over a BBC1 repeat of George Gently at the time.

The hour-long show may have won the slot but was down by 2 million compared with the channel’s slot performance for the year so far of 6.8m (26.9%). In 2008 the commercial network averaged 5.9m (23.8%).

Last night’s special couldn’t match the opening of the second series last year when 6.5m (27.6%) tuned in on 28 March. The eight-part series went on to average 5.6m (24.6%).

Whilst Benidorm was on air last night, it had the edge over a rerun of George Gently which averaged 4.6m (20.4%) over 90 minutes from 8.30pm.

Earlier the two main terrestrial channels were neck and neck. Heartbeat enthralled 4.6m (22.2%) at 8pm while BBC1’s Countryfile picked up 4.6m (25.1%) from the earlier time of 7.30pm.

Night at the Museum

For the second week in a row, Channel 4 aired the 2006 Hollywood movie Night at the Museum. Last night’s airing at 8pm gained 2.4m (10.9%) on the main channel with 446,000 on C4+1. The previous week 3.4m (20.6%) tuned in at 6.15pm.

BBC2’s natural history show South Pacific kept up its steady run at 8.30pm with 2.2m (9.9%) which was followed by The Incredible Human Journey an hour later on 2.1m (9.9%).

Five’s repeat showing of sci-fi film Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines at 9pm had 1.7m (8.8%).
