City signed off their Britannia Stadium campaign in fine style on Saturday afternoon by beating Wigan Athletic 2-0.

Goals from strike duo Ricardo Fuller and James Beattie secured a tenth home victory of the season and elevated the Club up to 11th place in the league table, leapfrogging Steve Bruce's side in the process.

A tense first half was followed by a blistering second half performance from the Potters with the Britannia Stadium Rocking.

Manager Tony Pulis named an unchanged side from the one which disposed of Hull City seven days prior at the KC Stadium, whilst the Latics welcomed South Korean Cho Won-Hee into their starting eleven with Ben Watson dropping to the bench.

The match began with both side's playing some attractive football but creating few chances. Abdoulaye Faye was slightly fortunate not to give away a penalty in the 13th minute when he appeared to trip Paul Scharner inside the box, but the referee waved play on.

Glenn Whelan was the first to try his luck for City two minutes later hen he fired in from distance, but the ball flew wide of Richard Kingson's left hand post.

Thomas Sorensen was called into action inside twenty minutes when Wigan's Cho Won-Hee let fly from 25 yards, but the big Dane tipped the ball over the cross bar.

A series of Delap throw ins were keeping the Wigan defence on their toes and at one point he managed to get the ball in the net. His missile evaded everybody and flew straight in to the goal. Kingson did not manage to get a touch as the ball narrowly evading his grasp, meaning the goal could not stand.

Chances came few and far between for the rest of the half leaving the two sides deadlocked at the interval.

Pulis made immediate changes by bringing on Danny Pugh for Leon Cort for the second period as the Potters looked to open the game up a little.

Pugh slotted in at left back, pushing Andy Wilkinson over to the right, with Ryan Shawcross moving into the centre with Faye.

Stoke showed more intent after the break and went in search of the opener. Fuller was first to have a go when he headed wide from Lawrence's corner after 56 minutes.

On the hour, substitute Pugh came agonisingly close to netting his first league goal for the club when he hit a spectacular effort from long range. His shot dipped but flew just over the cross bar to the disappointment of the fans.

Maynor Figueroa went close a minute later at the other end when the left back surged forward but fortunately his drilled shot went narrowly wide of Sorensen's right hand post.

The hosts were beginning to pile on the pressure and Kingson was showing signs of bowing to that pressure in the City goal, when he began to flap at a number of balls that were pumped into the box.

Wigan's resistance was finally broken in the 69th minute when Fuller gave the Potters the lead. He twisted and turned in the box and when it looked like his chance has passed him by, he struck past Kingson to register his 10th goal of the season.

The atmosphere had risen to a climax again and Etherington came close to doubling City's lead when he had a strike from 25 yards, but on this occasion Kingson was equal to it.

Stoke sealed all three points thanks to Beattie in the 76th minute. Etherington broke free down the left and his lobbed cross evaded Kingson, allowing the England international to head home at the far post in front of the Boothen end to send the Britannia Stadium wild.

City were then content to see the game out but still were the more comfortable side in the final quarter. Their final effort on goal came in stoppage time when Erik Edman fouled Ryan Shawcross 25 yards from goal. Whelan took the responsibility for the free kick but he put his shot over the bar.

Lee Probert's final whistle was greeted with a mighty roar around the stadium as the Potters brought their home campaign to a close with a well earned three points. After retreating to the dressing room, the entire first team squad returned to the pitch for a lap of honour. They walked around the pitch with their families thanking the fans for all their brilliant efforts this season.

They still have one match to go, but Tony Pulis' side have done themselves proud in staying up relatively comfortably, with a lot of that being down to the help of the loudest fans in the Premier League, and the electric atmosphere that the Britannia Stadium produced.

Fans can now look forward to a fun day out a the Emirates Stadium next Sunday.
