Sunderland have completed their seventh signing of the summer following the arrival of defender Michael Turner from Barclays Premier League counterparts Hull City.
Central defender Turner, 25, joins the Black Cats on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. He has captured the Tigers' official Player of the Year award for the last two successive seasons.
Signed by Phil Parkinson in July 2006, Turner joins Sunderland having made 146 appearances for the KC Stadium, scoring 13 goals. He played the full 90 minutes in Hull's 1-1 draw with Wolves yesterday.
Primarily employed on the right side of central defence, Turner began his career at Charlton Athletic. Though he didn't appear in a senior game for the Addicks, the Lewisham-born defender was loaned out to Leyton Orient and Brentford.
Turner made seven appearances for Orient and a further 16 for Brentford before the latter completed a permanent move to acquire his services for a nominal fee.
The move was a huge success as Turner quickly established himself as one of the top centre-halves in the lower leagues. He passde a century of appearances for the Griffin Park club and joined Hull having figured 110 times at senior level.
After settling well in Humberside, Turner became a regular at the heart of the Tigers' defence and was in the side which won promotion to the top flight courtesy of a play-off win at Wembley in May 2008.
And Turner's consistent form helped Phil Brown's side avoid relegation from the Barclays Premier League and resulted in calls for him to be added to the full England squad.
He was one of only two players to play every single minute of every Barclays Premier League game last season, the other being Sylvain Distin.
