Letter: Even pope recognizes evolution happens

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 3:39PM

A resident of Chelsea wrote an Other Voices column claiming that evolution isn't a science and that it demonstrates bigotry by those who believe in it. He then lists several reasons why it is not a science at all but a "faith based system, not provable by observation or scientific experimentation." He accuses evolutionists of being close-minded and of... Full story »

Letter: Canada's health system didn't help friend

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 2:37PM

A letter titled "Patients important, not insurance companies" (July 6) ridicules any reference to the problems of the Canadian health care system and says: "Ask any Canadian if they want our system of health care; they don't. They pay $50 a month." A good friend of mine in Canada died recently of breast cancer at the age of 46. In... Full story »

Letter: 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy weakens us

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 2:08PM

The controversy surrounding the issue of repealing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding gays and lesbians serving in the armed forces prompted a comment from Sen. Lindsey Graham, R.S.C. He believes the current policy has "served our country well" (NPR, July 9) and is opposed to repealing it. Question: How can the discharge, involuntarily, of some 13,000 gay and... Full story »

Letter: Can't Congress do what 70% of us want?

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 1:35PM

On June 23, the (soon to be defunct) Ann Arbor News published the results of a study done by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, which showed years of ignoring public preferences for more fuel-efficient vehicles. In an ironic twist, the economists who were responsible for the current survey by U-M were also economists for GM when they were... Full story »

Letter: Not all prostitutes prowl street corners

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 1:06PM

Let me be among the first to congratulate the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department on arresting three women in Ypsilanti Township for prostitution recently. (I wish there had been more detail about the planning of the operation.) With these demimondes in the slammer for 48 hours, I for one will sleep better at night. Now is the time for phase two... Full story »

Letter: Airport committee fails to tell full story

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 12:33PM

The airplane emergency on the Stonebridge Golf Course fell victim to the Airport Advisory Committee playing fast and loose with the facts. You reported that although the existing runway will be lengthened by 150 feet, "The parallel runway that will be used for takeoffs to the northeast would extend a full 950 feet closer, but those planes would be heading... Full story »

Letter: What happened to housing promise?

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 12:04PM

I was happy to read that the underground parking structure planned for South Fifth Avenue will be $1.5 million cheaper than planned. Wouldn't it be nice if that $1.5 million could be put toward the 100 units of affordable housing the city promised when the old Y (and its housing units) was closed several years ago? The Housing and Human... Full story »

Letter: Health care reform bill needs to be passed

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 11:40AM

It is in the best interest of ALL Americans that Congress pass HR676, the Single Payer Health Care reform bill, and do it NOW. Every day there are citizens who die because our health care system is broke. The problem we are confronting is a medical/insurance corporate establishment that drains 30 percent of every health care dollar while it denies... Full story »

Letter: Consumers Energy overkills our trees

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 20, 2009, 10:39AM

I would like to comment on the June 23 and 24 articles in The Ann Arbor News regarding the removal of trees. I applaud Bill Riney of Ypsilanti Township for trying to save his trees from destruction. A few years ago Consumers Energy and their butchering crew cut down a large American Elm that had survived the Dutch Elm epidemic... Full story »

Letter: Enough News space for Savabieasfahani

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 3:47PM

In the last month, The News has published an anti-Israel rant parading as a pro-Iranian-democracy "Other Voices" by Mozhgan Savabieasfahani. Ms. Savabieasfahani is better known to readers as a person who had to be led out of City Council chambers by police for disrupting meetings while wearing anti-Israel sandwich boards. I do not know why The News would publish, or... Full story »

Letter: Holiday light strands mess up the view

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 3:18PM

I am tired of seeing long strands of holiday lights wrapped around the trees downtown, especially along Washington Sreet near Main, and at Liberty Plaza. Some are just hanging off limbs that look half dead. I know it saves the DDA money to leave them on year-round, but it looks terrible in Treetown! Full story »

Letter: Majority changes, but not lobbyists' power

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 2:45PM

When you mention ethics in D.C., one or two elected members of Congress will stand up and rattle their swords for reform while the rest of the esteemed members will head for cover. A good example of this happened under the George W. Bush years when two members of the Republican ethics committee questioned some of its own members on... Full story »

Letter: Mall owner disrespects his tenants, customers

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 2:16PM

Arborland has always been a challenge to enter and exit with the limited access to Washtenaw Avenue. Now Washtenaw Avenue between Carpenter Road and Huron Parkway has another hazard: people dodging cars on Washtenaw to catch the bus or cross for shopping at Arborland from the bus. How can Finsilver Friedman Management Corp. expect the past customers of their tenants... Full story »

Letter: Israel abuses power to allow settlements

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 1:44PM

For many years, the Israeli government has used the idea of "natural growth" as a fig leaf to cover large-scale expansion of illegal settlements. Since Israel accepted the Road Map, which mandated a freeze of all settlement activity, the settler population in the West Bank (i.e. Palestinian land) has swelled from 211,400 to over 289,600 - an increase of 37... Full story »

Letter: Nothing phony about her sign posting

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 12:42PM

I read with interest Andrew T. Barnhart's letter, "What happened to all the 'Stop the War' signs?" in the July 5 Ann Arbor News. And I read it again Tuesday, because someone chose to mail it to me anonymously, with key phrases underscored in red. Mr. Barnhart said that "the war rages on" even though our troops in Iraq have... Full story »

Letter: Does professor deny white male bias exists?

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 12:13PM

In his Other Voices essay (July 5), visiting professor Matthew Schneider says that Supreme Court nominee U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor, must answer tough questions or be denied getting the job. Does that mean that he thinks Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito and John Roberts should not have been confirmed? After all, they were tutored in the art... Full story »

Letter: There should be more to food than meat

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 10:49AM

As primarily vegetarian, I found the Food section in The News on July 1 offensive. It was totally carnivorous! Also on the front page, the writer was lamenting the fact that less than 100% of people are not barbecuing animals. Since I know many people in this town veer in the direction of the vegetarian, I just think you could... Full story »

Letter: An ideal way to honor Kentucky and Ypsilanti

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 19, 2009, 9:49AM

I don't know why someone hasn't thought of the solution to the Ypsitucky controversy before now. Simply name the festival the Yipsi (pronounced Yip-see) Festival. This will honor our Southern brethren without using the apparently offensive tucky suffix. If there are any other problems I can help with, please let me know. I know you will. Full story »

Letter: Amen to critic of 'planted' questioner

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 2:26PM

While I do not know Kevin O'Brien, deputy editorial page editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, he should be lauded for his recent column. O'Brien chided President Barack Obama and his staff for planting a question at a press conference about the corrupt election in Iran. The staged question was asked by Nico Pitney, a writer for something called the... Full story »

Letter: Bail out the schools? Here's a better idea

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 1:54PM

Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti schools are once again proposing a bailout, in the form of a 2-mill, county tax. The 36 years I have lived in Washtenaw County I have watched the fiscally irresponsible, often incomprehensible policies of both districts. I merely shook my head and told myself it wasn't my problem. If these districts decide to make it my... Full story »

Letter: County schools tax likely to be permanent

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 1:25PM

I was reading in the Ann Arbor News that the Washtenaw Intermediate School District wants to put a new tax to the voters. They say it will be a five-year tax. Buyer beware! This would be in addition to the new gas tax that Lansing is going to implement on us (almost doubling the gas tax). Also this would be... Full story »

Letter: Don't agree with our signs? Make your own

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 12:52PM

Andrew Barnhart asks what happened to the "Stop the War" signs. I don't know about everybody else, but my sign did not disappear because of blind partisanship. Mine was ripped up three times. The first two times, I stuck the sign back together with duct tape and moved it closer to the house. The third time, the vandal destroyed not... Full story »

Letter: Beth Israel protesters have moral right

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 12:23PM

Some of you who have observed our weekly peaceful and silent vigils at Beth Israel Congregation appear to be caught between two claims: We vigillers certainly feel that, as a center for nationalist support for the state of Israel, Beth Israel is an appropriate venue for our vigil in support of Palestinians who are denied their rights by that same state.... Full story »

Letter: Readers would have paid more for print

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 11:46AM

I am one of the many readers who is very upset over the coming loss of the daily printed Ann Arbor News. I question the commitment of those who close to "shut 'er down" without trying some innovative solutions. Why not charge a bit more? Traverse City, a town of some thirty-odd thousand citizens, has weathered a 25-cent increase and... Full story »

Letter: Shame on The News for abandoning readers

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 11:17AM

So, it's time to say good-bye. How sad. I will miss my friend, The Ann Arbor News. We have been getting the news for many years and I read every copy even if it was a week old. Aren't there some hot-blooded people with ink in their veins out there willing to start up another News? You need good reporters... Full story »

Letter: Even downsized, News was welcome visitor

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 10:48AM

As an almost lifelong resident of Ann Arbor and a longtime subscriber to The Ann Arbor News, it is truly difficult to believe that a city the size of Ann Arbor cannot support a daily newspaper. Although it has been thoroughly compromised this past year in both size and content, we will all miss sitting down with the "news." Somehow,... Full story »

Letter: News is hardly alone in struggling print media

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 9:49AM

In response to Patrick Putman's letter on Sunday, July 12 and the other naysayers of The Ann Arbor News, I have one question for all of you. WHY did you continue to buy the paper if it is as bad as you make it sound? Patrick and all the others are obviously oblivious to the condition of the newspaper industry... Full story »

Letter: Death of News erodes area's quality of life

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 17, 2009, 9:20AM

One of the most important functions of a daily newspaper is the publication of death notices and obituaries. People in a community need to know when people special to them - or their family members - die, especially if they would wish to attend the funeral. We are now being coerced into logging in daily for this information. This... Full story »

Letter: AATA buses should lose those annoying ads

Posted on Ann Arbor Opinion on July 13, 2009, 11:50AM

Am I the only one bothered by ads on the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority buses? Especially ads on the bus' rump that stare you in the face at close range promoting lawsuits against the medical profession! In my opinion, publicly owned entities should stay out of the marketing business despite any revenues they may gain. AATA, just go about your... Full story »
