I stumbled across this site when looking for information on the Single Pioneer. I was Single Pioneer Flight Commander on 209 Sqn at Seletar from 1967 to the end of 1968 when we transferred to 20 Squadron to become C Flight with the Single Pins (A & B Flights were Hunter FGA 9s). The SP in 209 had a very distinguished career with many very interesting operations over much of SE Asia. The aircraft markings varied enormously, but were generally standard RAF camouflage with the falling red eagle squadron badge and the unnofficial Snoopy badge on his kennel. We generally had our names on individual aircraft: mine was on XL702 and tyen on XL705. Our roles were Tactical Transport, with both STOL airfield ops and Para drop, VIP transport, visual reconnaissance, forward air control for both ground attack aircraft and artillery and the euphemistically named 'Special Operations'.

It was never boring. In my time we lost a lot of the aircraft to accidents, plus two cases of aircraft shot down a long way from Seletar. The Major Accident/incident loss rate was allegedly the highest of any aircraft then in RAF service: the good news is that we suffered no fatalities, though it was a close run thing from time to time.

The carrier landings were very interesting, mainly because the carriers would usually not slow down enough for our 30kt threshold speed!

Very interested to read that 116 squadron was recognised in Feb 1941. My father was there at Hatfield at that time. He was a sergeant wireless operator and air gunner.

Sadly, he was killed in action over Elba in March 1944

I was a Dog Handler from 1957 to 1959. I competed in the Dog Trials At Netheravon and due to my own late command dropped to 3rd position. I later took part in the Royal Tournament one of the last ones with operational dogs before the Demo Team started with "Wendy" as the head dog. A very interesting web site. I was on 600 Squadron as a National Serviceman in 1955-6 as an Air Radar Mechanic. As the only two aircraft fitted with radar (IFF3 and Rebecca 7) crashed within weeks of my arrival, I did my service driving the Land Rover.

Fascinating reading. I was trying to glean any details about my uncle Jack Danes, his Halifax was shot down on May 24th/25th 1944 and he served out his time in a POW camp (diary at Elvington air museum).

I did my National Service at Rufforth 1953-55 The CO during that period was Wing Commander Thomas. The Adjutant was Fl Lt Anderson it was HQ for 64 Group Home Command.

also on the Station was 60 MU and Crash Unit headed by a Sgt Lake I served my 2 1 months there under the Catering Officer WO Fountain as the Clerk Messing my RAF number was 2589081.I visited the site last week. The airfield is now used by a Glider Club.

Most interesting. My Dad was transferred from the Army to the RFC at the near end of WW1 with the rank of S/Ldr, having been Actg Major prior to that. I held A/S/Ldr when demobbed at the War's end.

I found your pages when searching for Togs Mellersh with whom I served at The N F I U at Ford and, also, my friends Brance Burbridge, at the C F S at W Raynham, and Batchy Atcherly who ran #1 N/F course at Church Fenton in '41 and who became a lifelong chum! I have lived in the U S since '48. My rank doesn't seem to have come up to snuff with theirs!

Re. your entry for Air Commodore T.B. Prickman, he was born in 1902 and died in 1992 and was OC RAF Kenley during the Battle of Britain receiving the Battle of Britain clasp to his 1939-45 Star and the Order of Ornage Nassau. Other than that your entry is substantially correct. Thank you.

Congratulations on a great site. I served in the RAF March 1949 thru 1957, trained at Wittering, Feltwell, Stradishall, and then as pilot, (Meteor F8s) on 263 Squadron at Wattisham.

Finished up as a Gunnery instructor at Pembrey for a year, and for the last two and a half years, as a flight Instructor at Oxford University Air Squadron, flying out of Kidlington. Since settled in Canada and the U.S. working with Industry and the Airlines.

Looking for a history of RAF BALDERTON, just south of Newark, Notts, as part of my WW2 research on our village war memorial. One of ours flew out from there and now lies in the Netherlands with his colleagues of 408 RCAF. The RAF B.C.. 60th has somehow got its a. & t.'s mixed up for Balderton and I was looking for a station history, but your site doesn't have one either. Typical. Just my luck. Anyone out there got one please?

Also looking for any information at all about 270 Sqdn WW2 thought to be in or around Nigeria in 1944. Again one from our village who didn't return. Any pointers for any information on 270 appreciated. Thought, may be Coastal Command?

I enlisted in the RAF May 1941 and became a GG with 2819 Squadron at Chelveston. I was later tranferred to various units but spent the last two years of my service with 2829 Squadron until my demob in 1946. I was proud to have served in "The Mob" and often wonder how my old mates are getting on. In those days we were known as "Khaki Types"

My Uncle Fred was also in the regiment and was a Flight Sergeant but I don't remember his Regiment.

Feb. 14 1945 Lancaster pb183 and Lancaster pd232 collided over Remlingen (Wurzburg) Germany. This loss occurred on the way to Dresden. Any details on the final ops of pb183 would be appreciated. Bill Cowley, on another Lancaster (number unknown), saw the explosion. Sadly, he passed away a short time ago. Any other witnesses may assist me in finding out why these aircraft collided, and what occurred at the crash site. My name is Norm Garrett.

I am seeking the location of the loss of a 487 Squadron Mosquito IV EG-K serial PV173 lost 22 January 1945 supporting Operation Blackcock. The crew were pilot Flt Lt Leslie Graham and navigator Sgt Ron Batch, both killed, buried Rheinburg War Cemetary.

The RAF seems to have been active around Montfort on this date. Any further details would be greatly appreciated

I was very interested in your well informed website.  My main interest was the details on 502 Squadron as I was posted there from late 1952 until mid 1955.During this time we were presented with THE STANDARD.

The actual date was 24th May 1954, It was presented by the Governor of Northern Ireland, Lord Wakerhurst, K.C.M.C.

Very interesting site. Came across it while searching for info about my mother A.C.W./2, RAF, Isabella Adams Meikle. She served from 1942 - 1944 and never spoke of what she did so researching has been very difficult. My dad said she was a cryptographer or decoder in the Inverness area. He thought at a place called "Bunker Hill" but I've never found any sites in Scotland by that name. They met in Inverness at a dance. My dad was in the 22-24 Company of the Canadian Forestry Corp. It was interesting to read the page for No 600 Squadron relating to the ill fated raid on Waalhaven Airfield in Rotterdam. My mother's brother Leading Aircraftman HCW Hawkins was on one of the aircraft shot down and was as I understand, only reported missing in action at the time. It was only some years later that it was discovered he had in fact been killed and is now buried in Spijkenisse General Cemetery in Holland.

He attested in Toronto, Ontario on 10 October 1940 stating he was single and his occupation was with the Police Force. He attended Grades 1 through 8; 1921 to 1928 at Cunard Public School and Grades 8 through 10; 1929-1931 at Rouleau High School. He went on to attend Luther College in Regina, Saskatchewan for 1933 - 1934..

Commemorated on Page 529 of the Canadian Second World War Book of Remembrance.

I was researching my mother's story and found her photos of when she was flying barrage ballons. She was LACW Dorothy Hunt 2027976 of 904/5 Squadron, E Flight. She flew balloons at Manchester in 1942 and after that at Tilbury Docks in London. I have many photos of her and her flight and group photos at training camps. If these are of interest I will happily scan them and send them on.

An excellent site, full of much information for military/family historians. I an particularly interested in the entry re AVM Raymond Collishaw, after who the (former) Cassidy Airport, Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada is now re-named as Nanaimo - Collishaw Airport.

Incidentally, there is a first rate Military museum situated on Vancouver Island. It is the Vancouver Island military Museum, within the Rutherford Shopping Mall, Nanaimo, BC. and has many, many displays of all aspects of Canadian military service, including a VC gallery, and a comprehensive tribute to AVM Collishaw.  There is no charge for admission, staffed by friendly, helpful volunteers who have a wide range of military service and knowledge. It really is a must for anyone interested in military activities. I know, I've visited the museum 7 times since April 2005! (And I live in the UK!!!).- Michael Green.

Great Site, I might find some old 'Erks yet! I have tried Service Palls a few times ,no luck when you get old like me you remember old Palls when you were fit and well and life seemed an adventure.

I wonder how life treated them, I would love to have a natter about old times.

I served at RAF 21OTU.from 43-45 ATDU Gosport and 16 MU Stafford (Hixon) Happy days.

G'day

My grandfather flew dh9's during the ww1 and i'am trying to find out more I know he flew in 206 squadron from Deuxville in France. He was shot down and survived. He also was used to take recci photos and did mainly daylight bombing runs.

Many stories were said while sitting on his knee as a young boy.

Can you help fill in some details?

I was A.V.M. Bateson's personal steward at Stanmore Park.  He was one of the best officers that I ever met in the R.A.F.  I remember on one occasion he was to take a parade just after lunch.  As usual he came into the kitchen to thank me for lunch, he also enquired how my old Zundapt motor bike was going.I informed him that I was having a bit of trouble with it ,without hesitation he rolled up his sleeves and got stuck.  Half an hour later he had it fixed and of he went to the parade cuffs of his shirt covered with oil.  It was a pleasure to know such a gentleman.  John McCann

Hi. What a great site. Like many others, I stumbled across it one evening and stayed up way beyond my bedtime!!

I was able to respond to a couple of queries in the "Request" area, and would like to add one of my own.

My name is Malcolm Hughes, I came to Canada in 1966 so lost touch. National Service September 1955 - 57. Reception at Cardington; Square Bashing at Padgate; Radar Training at Compton Bassett; Ops at Hopton (type CHEL) until it shut down, then Trimmingham for some up-grading on Type 80 before posted to 143 SU at Bempton for the final year (listed as member of the experimental team). Demobbed Sept 14 '57 as 2770209 SAC. Met some great guys (and as a result of being near seaside resorts and holiday camps, some great gals!!). I played rugby for Yarmouth and Lowestoft while at Hopton, and for Bridlington while at Bempton. I have come across a few letters from some of the guys (and gals) that came to light as I helped clean out my mother's home in Castleford, Yorkshire after she passed away in 2004.

Last year I took my wife to visit most of the places but found little if any evidence of any of those stations. A brass plate on a pillar at Compton; a Caravan site at Bempton with a couple of building relics on the site; The Airship sheds at Cardington; nothing at Hopton.

I have letters from 3147047 Friston, J ("Tubby" from Beccles), 2747057 Urpeth, D. J. (Charlie?); 2770173 Bond, R., 4174256 Durnin, J., Mike Howell (who mentioned Johnny Cross), along with names of others including 2770182 McCallister, ?., 3147058 Beange, ?.

Excuse the long winded stuff (I became a teacher so that explains it!). Anyone out there from those times, would love to hear from you. "Red"

What an excellent site with a lot of in depth compiled information regarding the history of the Royal Air Force and associated arms. Lots of 'remembrances' which got the old grey matter working. Where are the Hospitals? They provided a sterling support to our forces and should also be remembered here (my viewpoint).

My father, Flying Officer Rod Hamilton McHaffie, of the RNZAF/RAAF Squadron 489 was based in Scotland sometime from 1943 - 45. He flew Beaufighters. He was killed in 1952 in a car accident in Kaitia NZ. I have one photo of him standing fully kitted out for a mission in front of a Beaufighter with his navigator. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him, or who has photos. I would attend any reunion of the Squadron if I knew about them. I just recently received his Service Medals. Towards the end of the war I served in Italy as an A.G with 40 Squadron. In October 1945 I was posted to 148 Squadron. After 148 disbanded I spent 1946 with AHQ Levant, Jerusalem.

Recently I have been communicating with a young historian whose mother, at the age of two, was on the ground at Freilassing. She lived near the marshalling yards and that was the last target of 40 Squadron and the rest of 205 Group. (25.4.1945). I find it incredible that his grandmother knew we were coming.

I came on this site by chance looking for info on pilots who flew Spitfires during 1944, I am totally mad about these planes and love to hear their engines as often as I can. Luckily my husband is as fond of them too, he has been designing parts of planes in Hamble for over 40 years and altho' retired--officially--is still working and loving the job as much. Any opportunity to get to see a show we go, wherever it is, altho' this is a little more difficult for me as I am now disabled, but just to hear the sound of the Spitfire engine I would go anywhere!! Luckily living in Southampton UK we have had quite a few flying displays, which were fantastic.

Does anyone know of any pilots who were killed in 1944 whilst flying specifically a Spitfire, and their lives before flying during the war, plus flying history please? I have a handful of photographs which belonged to my late uncle, Alan Whalley, who was with RAF ground staff from age 18 in 1942, to at least 1947. All were taken in various locations in India - Cawnpore 1945, Sidrapong 1946, Darjeeling 1946-7, Juhu Beach Bombay 1947, RMS Andes from Bombay to Southampton Feb-March 1947.

He was in Mechanical Engineering from at least 1945 and probably before that. One photograph is of him as a Sergeant with his Mech Eng co-instructor, Flt. Lt. Gilbey, in Sidrapong October 1946 and one is of the Machine Shop Team, Winners of the Inter-Section Cup 1945/46 (football). Other photographs give a few clues - Station Football Team, No. 11 Hill Depot, Darjeeling 1947; 202 Hut Cawnpore 1945. A few of the photographs are dated, and many have the names of his colleagues listed on the back, but unfortunately there is no detail regarding his home Station or Unit name - if anyone knows any more about the India or UK stations or remembers him I'd be very pleased to hear from them.

This particular uncle had a very quirky sense of humour; for some reason I have never quite been able to fathom, he sometimes referred to himself as "Jansen" or "Jansen Spreedle". This must be some private joke - or else it is some RAF thing/radio comedy thing of which I am not aware. I am hoping this may ring a bell with someone...

There are also some quite terrifying photographs of one single and one double roofed long building with thatched or grass roof and verandahs, in various stages of going up in flames because the roofs have caught fire. Single storey building, arched windows, pattern of rows of squares over windows and doors. Corrugated iron lean-to at rear of double building. One photograph looks as though this occurred in a fenced compound - I think this must have been one of the RAF camps.

Great site, the most comprehensive I've been able to locate. My father flew with RCAF squadron 415 in Wellingtons out of Thorney Island. His flight log indicated that his last operational flights were made attached to RAF 524. One flight of 415 went with RAF 119. I knew James Leathart when he was OC RAF North Coates, then a Bloodhound Training Base, and I was based in the Ministry of Defence. Michael Lamont in Ottawa Ontario, Canada.

I am researching the death of WO2 Daniel Joseph Somers, RCAF who died on June 28,1943 in North Africa. Was with 458 Sqdr RAAF, but their ORB shows none of their aircraft missing that night.

Aircraft was Wellington Mark 8,serial LA993. RAF records indicate aircraft was assigned to 458 RAAF.

Aircraft crashed 6m SW of L.G.106.

We have a cabin which was donated by the father of richard (Dick) Curtis and his brother Philip (phil) Curtis.

The cabin is named the Dick n Phil Cabin in memory of them losing their lives as spitfire pilots in the 2nd world war.

We are upgrading the cabin and intend to theme the cabin on the era of Dick and Phil Curtis.

I have read what you have to say about 295 Squadron, thank you. My father served on 295 and was killed in February '43. He was one of the rear gunners in the Halifax that was shot down over Saumur in the Loire Valley in France. along with a Whitley. 11 very brave men lost their lives that day, 19th February. There was one survivor, a great chap to whom I have spoken on the telephone. I have a great deal on information about that mission, if anyone is interested. the crews of the two air craft were honoured by the French last year, and I was privileged enough to be asked to lay the wreath. Does anybody have any information on the American units being flown into England on a 90 day rotational in 1955/56 in particular North Pickenham in Norfolk. The world is full of old men with regrets and yet fond memories of the the world as it was then, surely the stanza "The moving finger writes and yet moves on"is very appropriate. My father flew in Lancasters as "a end charlie" but would never discuss any of his experiences other than to say "son I was scared stiff I am no hero". I subsequently served in the RAFP, counting the days to demob as do most others,and yet when I became a civilian I felt empty something was missing, and these many years later as an old man I too am drawn back to view with nostalgia websites such as this to remember perhaps "we were once warriors". Really enjoyed your site. Most information I have found anywhere. My Brother Andrew Young served in 69 & 240 Sqn's In 240 Sqn he took part in 2 op's named "Paddle" Row2 & Row3. Another Op he remembers is " Jericko" Andy told me they got the names of "row2/3" from the cinema seats in the camp cinema. The paddle name was because someone had to paddle to shore and back again. Fantastic site. I have been interested in the eagles since I was a youngster back in 1942 when I saw the movie eagle squadron.  In later years I agree with the eagles. I am trying to find a Michael Parry who used to live in Hampshire and was known to have been in the RAF, probably late 1950s. He was born about 1937-1940.

I am very impressed by this site, which has evidently gained the praise of ex personnel, and outsiders such as myself.

I hope that somebody might be able to give me any memories of my father George Elsey, who was a Sergeant Tail gunner in Liberators flying convoy protection from Reykjavik. On VE day he was on patrol, and on landing he ran across an iced-up pond towards the mess to celebrate, fell through the ice, and was fortunately rescued. He received a reprimand for this. His flying log was lost within our family some time ago, and I have no memory of his squadron name or number, nor of his service record. Can anybody help me?

I only served with 541 from 30.9.45 to 26.4.46 having transferred from 542 when it was disbanded.

The following may be of use to you : the flower in the crest is ,I'm told, the 'Birdseye Speedwell'; the Sq. was flying Meteors in Nov. 1945.Pilots were posted to 1335 Conversion Unit ,RAF Molesworth in Aug.45. on return to Benson we were not doing PRU. flying in the Meteors but we were flying Meteors and Spitfires. Some information which may be of interest.

My father Hugh Scott CGM (525496). He passed away 1995. My fathers nickname was "Scotty" as in the cartoon "Bogside Types" The Airbag volume 1. No2.June 1944 He served with the RAF from 1935 right through to the end July 1945 he was an air gunner for the most part but did pilot and navigate sometimes they had to in the early days, he also served as an instructor before joining 223 Sq'd on window patrols. There were only two survivors from the original 269 sq'd at Abbotsinch before it was disbanded, there may have been others that joined but I am referring to the original group. My father did not talk very much about the war but did state a few things one is that by far the worst part of his time was with 269 (records lost) he reckoned you could double the flying hours recorded and some hair raising things which you would not believe. He stated that he survived three successive crash landings He also stated that the other survivor was court marshalled for refusing to go on further missions, I do not know his name but my dad stated that the only other survivor should not have been court marshalled as he had already done to much.

My father also served with other squadrons including 502 Sq,d as an instructor many people may not know this but there were many-many losses to 502 Sq,d due to sabotage of fuel etc.

My father was awarded the CGM with 223 Sq'd (100 group) the aircraft he flew in would fly over Germany then fly around in circles dropping window and drawing enemy fire whilst B17s bombers would fly in discharge their bombs only then would they return to base.

Formerly Flt.Lt. Richard Bailey here! Now teaching civvies to fly. I have had the priviledge to get to know Terry Owen, also formerly of 57 Sqn. although his time was on Lancs during WW2. He was part of "Langridges Shower" the crew of DX D (Dog). Some years ago, I arranged to 'host' him at RAF Lyneham when 57(R) was the Hercules OCU, in the foyer, as most Sqns, we had old stuff, and the old OPs logbook open at the most famous raids of the war, and there he was, very prominently listed. He'd never seen it until then, it clearly brought memories and emotions back to him to see names of old mates and faces, many of course, that didn't come back. He was able to provide old photos from then, including enough pictures of "D Dog" to enable me to have an exact scale replica made in wood. It is beautiful and I will always treasure it. I could take pictures and post on 57 Sqn. notice board web pages if you know of any that would be interested? Please note* The photos clearly show (and my model reflects same) that the tail fins were not red/black striped, but all black with the standard RAF red, white, blue bars.

Probably got some old photos of my own from Operation Corporate showing 57 Sqn. Victors on Ascension Island.

RAF LANCASTER CRASH AT LUQA § December 30th, 1952

A Royal Force Lancaster (SW344) of No. 37 Long Range Maritime Squadron cartwheels across St. George’s Street, Luqa, bursting into flames as it crashes into a row of buildings. Three of the four crew are killed and two civilians injured. One family is rendered homeless and fourteen buildings are damaged after what should have been a routine mid morning training flight left a 300 yard trail of debris.

I would like, if possible, a photo of this true story. My father used to tell us all, that he was painting.

This is a great site and with all the people that visit it, I hope to be able to find information on 541 Sqn aircraft serial numbers and pilots, and perhaps people who would know my dad, who may have flown PR missions on Mustang III with 541 Sqn in 44-45 as an RCAF pilot. He crash landed his aircraft and was later medically discharged. According to his accounts, 541 Sqn is the most probable Sqn.

Robert Wilson came from Florida and was born February 1932 his military no. was AF14474275 he served in the airforce from July 1952 to July 1956. I served at RAF Mildenhall/Lakenheath (as it was known in 1953) Mildenhall was the main base and Lakenheath was a satelite(sp) Sept 1953 to Dec 1955 with 3910th ABG Munitions. I am unsure if this is the right page or section to announce the death of Richard Keith SOULSBY

He was part of the Mountain Rescue Team at RAF Leeming until he was discharged with a broken ankle incurred during a rescue.  The exact date I am uncertain of but was just before he got married in Northallerton around 1969

Sadly Richard (Always preferred to be called Keith) suffered from Motor Neurons, Bulbar disease for around 5 years but was severely affected by this disease  during his last 18 months

He died at St Leonard’s Hospice In York at 1150 hours on Friday the 12^th October 2007

The Service and Cremation will be held Bishopthorpe Crematorium in York at 1430 hours on Monday 22^nd October 2007

Signed in to this website by accident and going through the guest book, I noticed a message from John Rose - my namesake - re Comms. Flt  RAF Buntingsdale Hall 1954/7

I was  on Comms. Flight RAF Ternhill, billeted at Buntingsdale Hall during my National Service from June 1955 until July 1956 - Junior Technician Air Wireless Fitter, direct from RAF Yatesbury.

Is it John Rose from the Yorkshire area - if my memory serves me right? If it is,do you remember  Tom Shaw from Swansea (Air Radar Mechanic) - I am still in contact with him - and Ken Rawlings. Other names that come to mind are  AVM Fullergood (AOC 22 Group) Flt. Lt Jimmy Besant, F/O Lake,Chief Technician Little, Sgts Donaldson and Waterhouse, Cpl Bull, Gwyn Vaughan, Gordon Veal, John Wright, and 'Buster' the driver.

I have recently joined the National Service (RAF) Association, following a visit to the former AVRoe works at Woodford, Cheshire where I was interested to find that the serial number of a Mark 21 Anson - WJ561 - the last one built for the RAF - has been preserved for posterity. The memories came flooding back - I then came up with the serial numbers of the other Ansons on Comm Flt - VM 359 (the AOC's aircraft), WD410 and WJ 560 - although I could not remember the serial number of the Mark 12, with wooden mainplanes - PH ? There was a Chipmunk - WD 390 - plus two Percival Prentices - serial numbers ?? - which possibly left Ternhill late 1955.  My further enquiries with RAF Ternhill, Shawbury and the RAF Museum have failed to add to this information.  I know that it is some time, John, since you put the message on the web but any contact, information, exchange of stories would be appreciated - or from other ex-Comm Flight guys.

My second cousin, John James Clifton, was a Sgt WOP/air gunner with 150 squadron based at Snaith. His aircraft, a Wellington III X3674 JN-H, was shot down on the night of 5/6th June 1942 while on a raid to Essen. The aircraft came down at Benschop near Utrecht and he is buried at Amersfoot cemetry, Netherlands. The other crew members were: Sgt. G.F.G. Bonner (wop/airgnr) Sgt. H.R. Camfield (pilot) Fl.sgt. J.R. Cooper (wop/airgnr) Fl.sgt. T. Kay (pilot) Fl.sgt. A.D. My uncle, Denis Crowther, crewed Liberators from Tain during WWII. He once told me that after the truce a U Boat attempted to escape from the Reich and 3 crews were sent to intercept. One of the Liberators was shot down by the U Boat but the other two crews managed to sink it. Are these facts correct or has he had a senior moment?

Great site....does anyone out there have any memories of my father - A E CHALLINOR, better known as TED CHALLINOR - he was with the Central Band of the RAF and stationed in several places during the 1950s and 1960s, notably Singapore and Uxbridge (where I, his son,was born in 1963). I hardly knew because due to ill health he left the RAF in the mid 1960s and died three days before my 5th birthday in December 1968.

My mum rarely gave me any indication of the kind of chap he was when I was growing up, but I think he enjoyed having fun! He was director for the Central Band for a while, and the march he composed, FLYING REVIEW, is still widely available on CD.

I have just found your very interesting site and will make it one of my Favourite Sites so that I can come back to read it all in detail. I served at RAF Wahn as a Gunner/Signaller with 38 (LAA) Wing RAF Regiment,HQ Control Flight, right up to the base being handed over to the New Luftwaffe, who were great guys. I loved RAF Wahn and have many good memories, I was part of a permanent Guard of Honour for visiting V.I.P.s to the base, prior to moving to RAF Wildenrath in 1957. This is the best site I have come, or rather stumbled, across. It is both free and user friendly. If anyone can help with my research, I would be very grateful. I am researching into the Polish 304 Squadron and most particularly their very first loss, which I believe was a training accident. The crash was at Edmondsley, 5 miles west of Durham; the plane was a Wellington Mk 1c and its registration was R1268 NZ-T. Unusually, it had a crew of only 4, all of whom survived. Extremely interesting to read about Sir Walter Cheshire, having been immediate neighbours between 1966 & 1970 (aged 7-11) in Crowborough, Sussex. Used to regularly go for incredibly long walks with his wife and our dogs, one each, on Ashdown Forest. Even broke into their house once, on her behalf, having locked herself out, by climbing in through the loo window! Remember the Queen visiting for lunch, and even bringing her own soap!

I find your website to be of great interest. My father, George Bradshaw, was a navigator flying Beaufighters and Mosquitoes within 96 Squadron during WW II. Some of his records indicate that he was based at such places as Honiley, Church Fenton and Drem and I understand that he also spent some time in France. I still have one of his old Log Books. Additionally, he designed the 96 Squadron Badge, the framed original approved by George R.I. and the Inspector of Royal Air Force Badges remaining a treasured family keepsake.

Looking for anyone who served with my dad from 49 sqd during bomb tests off Xmas Island 1957/58 (Operation Grapple, B flight. Valiant ). His name is Paddy Graham and was an SAC. By the way..found Bob Birkett for my dad...It was a shock for them both after almost 50 yrs of no contact. Bless!

Hi, I was Stationed at RAF Calshot from late 1959 to its closure, I had the Honour to be part of the closing down "Guard of Honour" Parade. If my memory serves me correct the officer in charge of the Guard was Flt Lt Dark, a Tall Dashing Fellow in true RAF Style. Enjoyed my posting there will always have fond memories.

PS Worked in the Tech Stores under Sgt Davis.

Excellent site

I have just picked up a group of medals to a South African ( Lt E.H.LEWIS ) who was attached to 210 Sqn RAF during 1944. He served as a commissioned air gunner and I was looking up info on the Sqn.  He then was posted back to SA and finished the war with 35 Sqn here in Durban.

I had the distinct pleasure of serving with 234 at RAF Geilenkirchen from April 1955 until disbanded in July 1957.Oh the joys of SYLT - NICOSIA - CHAUMONT . If I may make one small comment regarding your entry for 7 Sqdn. As a brand new Air Radar Mechanic (NBS) in 1962 my first posting was to 7 Sqdn at RAF Wittering. The squadron was equiped with Valiants at the time. In your notes you have suggested that the squadron was at Marham until it disbanded in Sept 1962. I am not totally sure of the exact dates but it was at certainly at Wittering for some time over 1961/1962, if not before.

Thank you for this site, and many congratulations on it. I came across it when looking for my late uncle's (Sqdn Ldr Leslie George (Phil) Phillips )squadron (812) when he flew Swordfish in the first part of WW2. I therefore appreciated the illustrations. He went on to Egypt and was blown up in a jeep behind enemy lines on reconnaissance. He was rescued by one of our tanks but had to be strapped to the outside (no room within) and was machine-gunned. In hospital almost a year from his wounds. Then seconded to Egyptian government to form their own (Royal) Airforce. Retired c. 1977

Thank you for such a comprehensive history. I found it quite interesting having served between 1965 - 1986 in a lot of locations throughout the world(but only as a cook who kept the troops happy?) I only have one minor compaint in that Penang doesn't seem to feeture very well?

My father Dr. E.N. Reynolds was a Beaufort and Wellington pilot ( RCAF ) with Coastal Command attached to the RAF from 1941-1945. He was in the U.K. ( mother's a war bride ) the Middle East, North Africa and Malta. I recently found a photo of his Beaufort Crew which included Ed Lake, Andy Young, and Frank Woolmington. I've been trying to learn more about what he never spoke of.... I suspect there are many other son's and daughters who now feel the loss of that generation and would like to ask the questions we never dared.

Just found this web site and found it most interesting.

My father (Richard Sandham was in 77 Squadron as a Flight Sargeant.He flew 5 missions over Germany and of those his plane was hit three times at the end of 1944.I think he was in hospital for shell shock for a couple of months before returning and joining 102 squadran to retrain on Liberators and ended up ferrying home troops from the far east.  He was eventually demobbed in June 1946.

I always wished I had asked him more questions about his experiences.

One cannot imagine what those young men went through at so young an age but I am so immensly proud of him and all those like him.

If you want any more info I would be only to pleased to help you.

I have recently discovered a draft history of my father's [LAC W.Fred Rigler - driver with No.11 detachment] service with 2876 Squadron from formation to disbandment. This I am copying, but see that there are many common points with B.W Davies narrative of the Squadron. This document appears to have been circulated to fellow members of the Squadron, and has come into my possession. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has more information on Squadron, or who through their father, remember the Rigler name.
