‘The Road to Guantanamo’ and ‘The Guantánamo Files’: Movie and a Book

“On 11 January 2002, exactly four months after the terrible events of 9/11, the first of 774 prisoners arrived at a specially constructed prison on a US naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Until recently, it was impossible to tell the stories of these men. Held without charge, without trial, without access to their families, and, initially, without access to lawyers, they are part of a peculiarly lawless experiment conducted by the US administration, which has chosen to disregard both the Geneva Conventions and the established rules of war, holding the men not as criminals or as Prisoners of War, but as ‘illegal enemy combatants,’ a category of prisoner which is itself illegal…

“Bringing these stories to life for the first time, The Guantánamo Files vividly demonstrates the human cost of the administration’s ill-conceived and violently executed ‘War on Terror’.”

In addition to the above book by Andy Worthington, to help expose the crimes of the US administration, directors Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross produced the following docudrama, ‘The Road to Guantanamo’, based on the lives of the ‘Tipton Three’, “the collective name given to three young men from Tipton, England, United Kingdom, who were held in extrajudicial detention for two years in Guantánamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba.”

I have not had a chance to read ‘The Guantánamo Files’ yet, however I have watched ‘The Road to Guantanamo’ numerous times and highly recommend it. You can go directly to the source of the video where you can watch it in full screen mode at Google Video. Keep in mind that watching this movie sooner rather then later is a good idea since it may not be available for free viewing for much longer.

The following is the trailer, just in case you need an incentive to watch this award winning movie which the New York Times called “A film of staggering force”, and Variety described as “A punch in the gut”.

Further information on ‘The Guantánamo Files’, “or to order copies, see the websites of Pluto Press or the University of Michigan Press. The book is also available through Amazon.
