ARIA Awards 2009 nominations a musical mixed bag

IT'S the legends of rock - black T-shirt division - versus the most colourful band under the sun.

Only at the ARIA Awards would you have AC/DC going toe-to-toe with dance futurists Empire of the Sun.

But so it will be at the ARIA Awards next month with AC/DC's Black Ice, their 15th studio album, a contender for album of the year in the same category as Empire of the Sun's debut, Walking on a Dream.

That is akin to comparing elephants and apples. And both face some hot competition for the award from Sarah Blasko's critically lauded As Day Follows Night.

In the list of finalists announced today (SEE BELOW FOR FULL LIST), Darwin songbird Jessica Mauboy tops the contenders with seven nominations, including for best female artist, best pop release and as breakthrough artist for her Been Waiting album and Running Back single.

Empire of the Sun, the combo formed when Luke Steele of indie rockers The Sleepy Jackson changed musical direction by teaming with Pnau's Nick Littlemore, has six nominations, including single of the year for I've Been Waiting and best pop release. The ARIA Awards will be held in Sydney on November 26, with Robbie Williams as guest performer.

Other artists with multiple nominations include Eskimo Joe, AC/DC, hip-hop outfit Hilltop Hoods and blues performer C.W. Stoneking, whose Jungle Blues album dips back into the blues and jazz forms that were popular in the 1920s.

Among the new nominees, Ladyhawke has generated the biggest buzz with five nominations, including best breakthrough artist for her self-titled album and My Delirium single.

She still calls New Zealand home but apparently qualifies under the current ARIA guidelines, even though Neil Finn was excluded from the ARIA Awards in 1999 because he had moved from Australia to Auckland.

Melbourne's The Temper Trap are the other newcomers with a strong presence, scoring nominations for album of the year, breakthrough artist and rock album of the year for Conditions and single of the year for Sweet Disposition.

Brisbane's Kate Miller-Heidke is up for single of the year (The Last Day On Earth) and best female artist and best pop release for her second album, Curiouser.

A changing of the guard in Australian music is revealed in the nominations for best adult contemporary album, with Bob Evans, Josh Pyke, Little Birdy and Paul Dempsey – all relatively young and all strong chart performers – now considered as "adult".

Katy Steele, of Little Birdy, is the younger sister of Empire of the Sun's Luke.
