Two second half goals gave Everton a tremendous 2-1 success in Belarus against FC BATE Borisov.

Trailing at the break, strikes from Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill turned this Europa League clash Everton’s way.

A thigh injury picked up in training on Wednesday evening cost Joseph Yobo a place in the squad and David Moyes was forced to play Tony Hibbert alongside Sylvain Distin at the heart of the Everton defence.

Dan Gosling switched to right-back and Yakubu and Jo were paired together in attack.

The Toffees pressed forward straight from the kick-off and within 20 seconds of the start, Tim Cahill’s well struck effort needed sharp attention from Sergie Veremko in the FC BATE goal.

Jo goes in for an aerial battle with goalscorer Dmitri Likhtarovich

Pavel Nekhaychik was the first to threaten for the home side but an excellent tackle by Hibbert stopped him in his tracks inside the box.

Back in Eastern Europe, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov was desperately unlucky after 14 minutes when his ferocious drive flew past the keeper but smacked against the left-hand post

FC BATE took the lead a couple of minutes later when Dmitri Likhtarovich beat Tim Howard all ends up with a stunning shot from 20 yards.

Everton should have levelled on 26 minutes when Yakubu created an opening for Tim Cahill but the normally clinical Aussie pulled a poor shot wide of the target from six yards.

The visitors were certainly forcing the issue and when Bilyaletdinov danced his way to the by-line and chipped a nice cross into the box all that was missing was a final touch.

FC BATE took the ascendancy at the start of the second period but Everton defended stoutly and protected Tim Howard fairly comfortably. Indeed, it was the Blues who nearly carved an opening when Leon Osman showed clever footwork to break clear only for his final pass to cannon off a defender into the grateful arms of Veremko.

A drenched Fellaini celebrates

For the main, though, the ball stayed in the Everton half of the field. As quickly as it was being cleared it was coming back again and David Moyes cut an increasingly agitated figure in the technical area.

He was a saturated figure too as the driving rain was incessant on a miserable Minsk night.

However, the drenched travelling Toffees were soon singing in the rain!

Everton equalised in the 69th minute. Yakubu was crudely upended on the edge of the box and when Leighton Baines whipped over the free-kick, Marouane Fellaini was left unmarked to guide a downward header into the corner of the net.

On 77, Everton took the lead. Tim Cahill looked suspiciously offside when he chased a forward punt but the flag stayed down and he lofted the ball over Veremko.

It proved to be the winner.

Injury, suspension and ineligibility deprived Moyes of no less than TEN first-team squad members so this was a magnificent victory for Everton.

Tony Hibbert was excellent in his temporary central role alongside the wonderfully reliable Distin, whilst Dan Gosling also excelled in unfamiliar territory.

What a great result. Going a goal down away like that is tough but a bit easier to take when its a 35 yard screamer cos theres not much you can do about it. In a sadistic sort of way you applaud the strike or give it credit at least. Its not like they bossed us and turned us inside out before tapping in from 6 yards. Thats harder to take. The fact we came back and won was great but the way we done it was even more pleasing. There was no panic amongst the team. Sure enough we were better first half with no joy than we were 2nd half with a result. The lads shown great patience and spirit in that 2nd half. We couldnt get the ball off them for most of it (still without panic) but when we did we made them pay. We played proper Euro style that 2nd half.It shows we are getting used to the difference in style between Euro and the Prem. If we can keep progressing a little further in this comp each year then we will gain the experience to be serious contenders. We all know Champs league is a different level but we are getting there for sure.

gerard, i made that comment before the match, when lets face it, hearing hibbert is to play center half didn't sound too good. and if you'd read my second comment, i give hibbert all the credit, he was fantastic.

It is interesting that the Everton away kit is dark. There have been some studies by scientists that teams that play in red are more successful. In colour therapy red does have certain connotations. It may increase the percieved size, confidence, and ferocity of a player. Red is highly visible. There is some carry over of this in black, the New Zealnd All Black rugby team and their illustrious history. When England wore red shirts though, they have still only won one world cup. Germany have white shirts, and Brazil yellow shirts. So is the theory real? The court is still out to my mind. Evertons traditional modern away kit has been yellow. We have had some interesting away wins playing in dark away kits, is it giving us a touch of magic? I am buried in books, press cuttings, and notebooks. I know, or THINK i know,a few things about the science of winning football matches.

having been critical of Hibbert this season, it was very good to see him rise to the occasion in an unfamilar position. Well done Tony - a true blue!

Well done Hibbert for stepping in and putting in a solid performance. After last seasons problems with fit centre forwards seems like this season we`ve got the same problem with centre halves!! Hope Yobo is fit for Stoke cause all they have to hurt us are long throws and corners. COYB
