International law expert, Professor Yoram Dinstein, on the international ‘War on Terrorism’

Media Release, Monday 18 August 2008

Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University, Yoram Dinstein, will discuss the ‘Many Faces of the International War on Terrorism’ at the Melbourne Law School’s inaugural annual Nathan and Pamela Jacobson Lecture tomorrow.

“The ‘war on terrorism’ has been waged globally since 9/11. Yet it has many faces, domestic and international, legal and political,” says Professor Dinstein. “Even experts often fail to define terrorism, finding it a challenge to distinguish terrorism from ordinary crimes. The public at large tends to confuse the fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq with terrorist attacks in Bali or London.

“The lecture will try to unravel the intertwined threads of the on-going struggle against terrorism.”

Professor Dinstein's lecture inaugurates the Law School's newest series - the Nathan and Pamela Jacobson Oration. Mr Nathan (LLB, 1946) and Mrs Pamela Jacobson are generous supporters of Melbourne Law School and have recently established the Nathan and Pamela Jacobson Lecture, which will be delivered at the Law School annually by leading global presenters.

Professor Dinstein is Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University where he formerly held the posts of President, Rector and Dean of Law.

Professor Dinstein is a member of the Institute of International Law. He is President of Israel’s national branch of the International Law Association and of the Israel United Nations Association. He has served as Chairman of the Israel national branch of Amnesty International and as a member of the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law. He is a member of the Council of the San Remo International Institute of Humanitarian Law.

Professor Dinstein has written extensively on subjects relating to international law, human rights and laws of armed conflict. His latest books in English are The Conduct of Hostilities under the Law of International Armed Conflict (2004) and War, Aggression and Self-Defence (4th ed., 2005), both published by Cambridge University Press.
Dean of Melbourne Law School, Professor James Hathaway, praised the generosity of the Jacobsons in endowing the Oration.
"This wonderful lecture series opens a new chapter in relations between the Australian and Israeli legal communities. We are thrilled that Professor Dinstein, one of the world's leading authorities on the international law of armed conflict, has agreed to launch the Oration by helping us to untangle the policy muddle justified by the need to 'fight terrorism' - and which has too frequently caused us to abandon fundamental values in the legitimate pursuit of collective security."
