Who's who of Australian Rock

Chris Spencer began compiling the database in the mid eighties and in 1989 published his first edition of the book version of the Who’s Who of Australian Rock. After the 3rd edition, Informit produced a cdROM version in 1993, and finally in 2007, the database is online. In mid 2007, the database held information about 36,000 artists, 40,000 releases, 66,000 musicians, and 175,000 tracks.

The database includes many entries that are not included in the book format. The future of the database is uncertain. Chris intends to update regularly over the next few months while looking for suggestions about how it can become viable. The amount of new information that needs to be added to the database is so large that it requires several hours a day research, a task Chris is unable to maintain as a hobby.

If you are able to assist in the collection of information, research your local music press or wish to document the bands and music from your local area, contact Chris.

If you are a musician and wish to update your entry, provide more information about your band or wish to provide information about you have some connection with, or saw perform live, please contact Chris. (Just a quick note, any mistakes that occur in the database are not deliberate! They may have occured because of a variety of reasons, poor typing being one!)

Many of the records are not complete - because of the mammoth task to document and list every track listing or song writing credits for example.

If Chris is successful in obtaining some more [financial] support he may have more time to complete the missing data!

Chris thanks fellow contributors Paul McHenry and Zbig Nowara for their assistance, as well as those people who have provided feedback and information over the past 20 years.

PS my thanks to Tom at Howlspace for all his work and interest.
