HATEBREED's popularity has led some to question the unit's street cred, which never made much sense to me. Give credit where credit is due; the band always delivers the goods. Some albums are better than others, but none are subpar. "Supremacy" was no exception, even though I thought that continuing in that exact same vein might have worn off some of the luster. Jamey Jasta and crew must have been thinking the same thing because the new self-titled effort sees a fresh injection of ideas without any sacrifice of metallic hardcore brutality.

Let there be no question as to the pure ferocity and defiant lyrics of self-preservation and survival against all odds that define any HATEBREED album; those qualities are present in spades. From album opener "Become the Fuse" to the chug 'n stutter of "Not My Master" to the speeding SLAYER-like hardcore of "Hands of a Dying Man" to the vitriolic "As Damaged as Me", this one is a first-rate brawler. But it is the little things that make such a big difference here; the riff turns, the lead guitar parts, and the cadence switch ups are very well developed. Time spent with CROWBAR's Kirk Windstein has rubbed off as well. "Between Hell and a Heartbeat" opens slow and doomy with a creepy lead before the romp begins; the brief lead guitar bursts on the chorus add depth too. The "whoooaaa" backing vocals on "No Halos for the Heartless" are a pleasant surprise and the street-punk melody with sung vocals (hard as nails, but sung nonetheless) are an even bigger surprise on the very catchy "Every Lasting Scar". While we're discussing surprises, mournful and melodic instrumental "Undiminished" is a big one as well. "In Ashes They Shall Reap" is an immediate classic, the chorus pattern of "Born to bleed / fighting to succeed / built to endure / what this world throws at me" reminiscent of "I Will Be Heard", yet it too comes with a CROWBAR chord twist on the verse.

Rounding out with a sharp interpretation of METALLICA's "Escape", Best Buy bonus live tracks "To the Threshold" and "As Diehard as they Come" and exclusive DVD of European festival performances (and other goodies), the self-titled album may very well be the best from HATEBREED since "Perseverance". It is a perfect example of how a group can retain a core style that fans have come to expect without running it into the ground.

Could someone PLEASE explain to me what this band has to do with "hardcore?" This is nu-metal minus the groove. De-tuned, slow, it's the opposite of hardcore. It's like Disturbed played by former highschool jocks, pissed by their failure to "make the team."

Mob 47 is hardcore. Old DRI, COC, etc circa '85 and before, THAT is hardcore. Negazione, Raw Power, NEOS, that's hardcore. Play that, and then play Hatebreed and tell me what they have in common.

Answer: Nothing.

But hey, it takes all types to make the world go 'round.
Don't ask / don't tell, right?

this album really impressed me. i was expecting more of the same from hatebreed but they have definately added to their formula without sacrificing none of their brutality. jamey singing (sort of) and piano? never would have expected it from hatebreed! they sound revitalised and possibly their next album will be their defining moment.

notice that no one has mentioned the word 'hardcore' on its own. scott mentioned metallic hardcore, which is exactly what hatebreed is, and which is the genre hatebreed helped pioneer in the mid-late 90's. there's different types of hardcore, just like there's different types of metal. i thought u would know that considering you have a type of metal in ur name.

I am a big Hatebreed Fan.They are brutal Live! I like that they tried experimented with the Vox and added guitar Leads. But these guitar riffs are flat out boring. i was hoping the new guitar player would bring some new styled riffs to the table. Instead he just rehashed alot of Sean's riffs, and just played them an octave higher! I also hope Jasta keeps his crooning for his Kingdom of Sorrow project because man it just ain't working for hatebreed

I knew that people were going to give this album a low score simply because it is a Hatebreed album. Sucks to be those assholes. Fuck you, this is a good album.

HATEBREED OWNS. FUCK THE HATERS. All the haters are little hessian boys who should get into the pit so they can get kicked in the face..but of course they wont because they would rather listen to bullet for my valentine or My chemical romance.

But I know that this CD I like a lot, heavy guitars, solos here and there, and solos are not Hatebreed style. Lyrics that anyone can relate to on any given moment. If people don't like this, they don't, period, and that's OK with me, but, I will definitely listen to this as often as I can... I even played Supremacy before this just to appreciate the improvement... and there are improvement...

Kick Ass!!!

Gotta say I love this band, tried not too because some real assholes I know (bunch of hard core douche-huffers), but the music really won me over when I saw them live a few times. I can't wait for this, just got Endgame, so it will be a while before I want something else new (also got Emperor's live Inferno - excellent by the way). I don't see how most metalheads can't get into this band. They have some real basic elements, and if you're into progressive stuff, then yeah, they will bore you, but as far as crossover stuff goes, it just does not get better than this band (maybe S.O.D. but that's it).

they're a hybrid band.. hardcore AND metal.

For me, each album tends to get less interesting, but i still like them and support them. I will pick up this album and see where it takes me.

MMMMM.....NO NOT IN THE "TRADITIONAL" SENSE. I UNDERSTAND WHAT THRASHMONGER IS SAYING BEING FROM THE OL' SKOOL MYSELF. BUT, THIS BAND DOES KICK MAJOR ASS AND DOES HAVE ELEMENTS OF HARDCORE. IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT TIME NOW, THAT'S ALL. THE SAME ARGUMENT COULD BE MADE ABOUT TODAYS' METAL. IS HATEBREED HARDCORE? CONSIDERING SOME OF THE SHIT THAT'S OUT THERE IN THE MAINSTREAM,YES. THERE IS STILL SOME UNDERGROUND BANDS DOING (FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD) "REAL" HARDCORE AND I LOVE THAT STUFF TO. NO MATTER WHAT YOU LABEL THEM, YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THEY BRING THE GOODS EVERYTIME.

there are a lot of major douche bags on this thread. Hatebreed has been doin music their way since the early 90's and have not conformed to any specific genre guideline. If you HAD to classify them, i'd say they are metalcore because they are similar to other metalcore bands like Unearth and Killswitch Engage. They all have hardcore and straight forward metal elements, hence metalcore. And i already know ther are gonna be people shitting on what i write, so fuck you guys in advance. I absolutely love this album, the best song has to be "everyone bleeds now". Cant wait to see hatebreed with Corpse and Unearth this november!!!

The bands you mentioned are hardcore...from a different time. With that logic, you can look at Iron Maiden and say that they're not metal now because they don't sound like they did on Number of the Beast.

Anyways, the new Hatebreed is great! There are some that sound like the same ol' stuff. But there are tracks that are so damn good, it totally makes up for that.
