SWARM, KNIGHTHAWKS IN FOUR PLAYER TRADE
Goaltender Bold to back up O'Toole; Swarm lands ND standout
10/15/2009The Rochester Knighthawks and Minnesota Swarm have completed a trade. The Knighthawks have acquired goalie Aaron Bold, defenseman Ian Rubel and the rights to defenseman Cody Johnson from the Swarm. The Swarm have acquired 2009 draft pick Ryan Hoff and the Knighthawks' second-round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft.
"We identified a hole that needed to be filled when (Pat) O'Toole was hurt last year and missed games", said Knighthawks General Manager Curt Styres. "Bold is a solid standup goalie we been watching for four years now. We think he is ready to go in and get us lots of wins. The defense we'll be using this year will be a perfect match for Bold's style," said Styres. "Cody Johnson is a fast transition player with a scoring touch and is as tough as they come. Ian Rubel is a very strong, well-conditioned natural athlete and a solid D man."
Bold, 24, enters his fifth NLL season in 2010 after spending the last three with the Stealth. In his career with the Stealth, he appeared in 37 contests and posted a 3-4 record with 260 saves.
The Knighthawks also added 21-year-old Cody Johnson. The defenseman was the Swarm's fifth-round selection (44th overall) in the 2009 NLL Entry Draft. He played college ball at Onondaga Community College in 2009 and won a junior college national championship.
Rubel, 31, comes to Rochester as a three-time Champion's Cup winning defenseman. Rubel enters his 10th season in the NLL in 2010 after appearing in two games with Minnesota in 2009. In his career, he has played in 90 games and recorded two goals, 11 assists and 148 loose balls. He won titles with the Toronto Rock in 2002, 2003 and 2005.
For Minnesota, Hoff finished his senior season at the University of Notre Dame in 2009 ranked second all-time in school history in goals scored with 134. For the third straight season in a row, Hoff led the Fighting Irish in goals with 32 tallies and helped lead the team to a 15-1 record and a NCAA Tournament appearance. The 5'11" 203 lbs. native of Baldwin, Maryland was later named to the All-America third team and was a candidate for the prestigious Lowe's Senior Class Award.
"Ryan had an outstanding career at Notre Dame where he was one of the top players in the NCAA. He is a talented young forward who we see having the skills to translate to the indoor game", said Swarm General Manager Marty O'Neill.
Hoff, 22 (7/9/1987), finished the 2009 season with 35 points (32g, 3a) along with 27 ground balls while starting in all 16 games. Over his four-year career, Hoff started in all but three games at Notre Dame, a program record of 63 games.
The Swarm parted ways with Ian Rubel who appeared in five career games with the Swarm from 2008-09. Both Aaron Bold and Cody Johnson were acquired during the 2009 NLL Entry Draft. Minnesota received Bold along with forward Alex Turner in a trade with the Washington Stealth and Johnson was selected by the Swarm in the fifth round (44th overall).
