From "Cooking On The Block"with Chef Ellie Espo

Jersey City native to duel on 'Iron Chef'

Jersey City-born chef Anthony Amoroso is to appear on the Food Network's hit show "Iron Chef America" this Sunday.

Amoroso, 37, who worked in the Michael Mina Bellagio restaurant in Las Vegas and is now the executive chef at SeaBlue Restaurant in the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, will battle Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto.

The Food Network program is based on the Japanese cooking show in which a guest chef battles one of the show's resident "iron" chefs. Both have to cook five dishes within an hour, using a secret ingredient. A jury decides which chef wins.

At age 18, Amoroso told his mother he wanted to attend cooking school. "I was totally surprised," said his mother, Lisa Amoroso, 64. "I thought maybe it was a whim."

But Anthony Amoroso was in it for the long run.

He attended the Culinary Arts Institute at Hudson County Community College and then worked in several restaurants, including the Oceana Restaurant in New York City where he met his wife, Angela Herman.

"It's incredibly exciting," Herman, 34, said about her husband's appearance on the show. "It's an honor even to be asked."

Amoroso could not comment on his appearance on the show, because he signed a non-disclosure agreement. The chef plans to watch the episode with family and friends in a private dining room in the restaurant where he works.

To find out what happens in Morimoto versus Amoroso, watch the show Sunday, 10 p.m., on the Food Network.
